RIYADH: Security Forces Hospital in Riyadh has successfully performed its first kidney transplant, marking the launch of its organ transplant program, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.
The operation was carried out on a 32-year-old patient with kidney failure, who received a kidney donated by his 35-year-old sister after comprehensive medical tests confirmed the pair were compatible.
The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary medical and surgical team, with both the donor and recipient reported to be in stable condition and receiving follow-up care, according to SPA.
The General Department of Medical Services at the Ministry of Interior said the launch of the kidney transplant program reflects efforts to strengthen specialized medical services and improve the quality of healthcare provided at Security Forces Hospital.
The department added that the program also reinforces the hospital’s role as a referral center capable of carrying out complex procedures.
Kidney transplantation is widely regarded as the preferred long-term treatment for eligible patients with end-stage kidney disease, offering improved survival rates and quality of life compared with long-term dialysis.
Saudi Arabia has continued to expand organ transplantation services in recent years as part of broader efforts to enhance specialized healthcare and encourage organ donation.
