ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s government is planning to modernize the country’s railways infrastructure to help position Pakistan as a regional trade hub, according to state media, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday urging officials to complete all projects within stipulated timelines.
Pakistan, currently bolstered by a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, is trying to capitalize on its geostrategic location to establish itself as a transit trade hub in a bid to ensure a sustainable economic recovery after a prolonged meltdown.
The country has undertaken several projects to upgrade rail infrastructure, expand freight services and integrate the existing network with ports, industrial centers and neighboring countries to speed up cargo movement and enhance cross-border trade.
Presiding over a meeting to review Pakistan Railways’ transformation plan, PM Sharif expressed confidence that the modernization of railways infrastructure will be instrumental in positioning Pakistan as a regional trade and logistics hub.
“Railways is the most cost-effective and efficient mode of transportation for both passengers and freight,” he was quoted as saying by Radio Pakistan broadcaster.
“A modern and efficient railway system will play a vital role in strengthening the country’s economy, promoting trade and enhancing regional connectivity.”
Officials briefed participants of the meeting on Karachi-Peshawar Main Line-1 and Rohri-Taftan Main Line-3 upgradation projects, Thar Coal railway connectivity and other development initiatives, according to the report.
It was informed that the detailed engineering design for the Karachi-Rohri section of ML-1 has been completed, while the upgradation of the Rohri-Nokundi section of ML-3 will be undertaken under the Public Sector Development Programme and bridge financing arrangements.
The prime minister directed authorities complete all railways development projects within the “stipulated timelines while ensuring the highest standards of quality.”
