Where We Are Going Today: Alkhobar’s Out of the Ordinary Artisan Gelato

With the Eastern Province’s sweltering summer sun in full swing, one respite is Out of the Ordinary Artisan Gelato.

Established in 2020, this charming little space in Alkhobar’s Qurtuba Square hits the spot with the slogan: “Fresh gelato made today. Tomorrow, too.”

Staff are friendly with recommendations and happy to let you sample their new flavors, which rotate daily.

I went in knowing what I wanted but did indulge in a sample or two just to try. I was in the mood for coffee but also for gelato, so I got the next best thing: the affogato which combines both.

Mine came with a scoop of speckled Madagascar vanilla gelato for SR29 ($7) but you can choose whichever flavor you fancy.

The hot and cold ratio was balanced and enjoyable, but I was disappointed when they refused to place it in a ceramic cup since I notified them I would be enjoying it on the premises. Instead, I consumed it from a disposable cup.

The seating was limited indoors and it got quite crowded while there. Of course, there was ample seating outside, which is likely pleasant in the slightly cooler nights.

I also ordered the small gelato cup with two scoops: one was mango and the other was hibiscus for SR22. I enjoyed the contrast and the explosion of flavors in my mouth.

Note that they are closed on Sundays, and currently operate between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturdays-Wednesdays and close at 11 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.
