RIYADH: The Heritage Commission has announced the results of the fourth season of archeological excavations at the ancient Hillit mining settlement as part of its ongoing efforts to preserve Saudi Arabia’s antiquities.
Located about 110 km northwest of Al-Dawadmi in Riyadh region, the site is listed in the National Antiquities Register.
The latest dig season uncovered 18 architectural units and a significant number of artifacts, most notably a stone weight engraved in Jazm script with the measure “ratl” (pound), which is probably about 1,200 to 1,400 years old.
Other discoveries include ornaments, pottery, glassware and stone tools, the report said.
Preliminary findings indicate the site was inhabited from the 7th century, consistent with results from previous excavation seasons.
