Al-Hutaima Crater: A window into northern Arabia’s volcanic past

Al-Hutaima Crater rises east of Salma Mountain in Hail Region, one of northern Saudi Arabia’s most striking geological landmarks. Spanning 1.25 km across and plunging 110 meters deep, the crater sits amid a dramatic landscape where mountains meet ancient volcanic plains. Dark volcanic rock formed by long-ago lava flows encircles the site, while sediments at its base bear the marks of thousands of years of erosion and weathering.
