Pakistan says global support reflects confidence in its role in US-Iran diplomacy

  • Foreign Office says Islamabad MoU, Lucerne summit reinforce value of dialogue
  • Pakistan acted as key mediator during US-Iran war, helping secure peace framework

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Wednesday international recognition of its role in efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran reflected growing confidence in Islamabad’s commitment to promoting dialogue, peace and regional stability.

The remarks come days after Washington and Tehran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which established a ceasefire framework and launched negotiations toward a broader settlement, and after the follow-up Lucerne summit in Switzerland that produced a roadmap for a final agreement within 60 days.

“Pakistan welcomes the positive recognition and encouraging remarks from various countries, partners and members of the international community regarding our constructive role in promoting regional peace, dialogue and de-escalation efforts,” Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said during a weekly news briefing.

“Such recognition reflects the international community’s trust in Pakistan’s commitment to advancing dialogue, peace, security and stability across the region and beyond,” he added.

Pakistan emerged as a facilitator of diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, hosting early high-level contacts between the two sides and working alongside Qatar to support subsequent negotiations.

The Islamabad memorandum, signed last week, ended months of conflict between the United States and Iran and paved the way for negotiations aimed at reaching a broader peace agreement. Talks in Switzerland on Sunday resulted in a roadmap for a final settlement and established mechanisms to support implementation of the accord.

Andrabi said the developments reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding belief that dialogue remained the most effective way to resolve international disputes.

“The Islamabad MOU and the Lucerne Summit reinforce our faith in dialogue and diplomacy as the most effective means for peaceful settlement of disputes and conflicts,” he said.

Pakistan has increasingly highlighted its diplomatic role in the process, with officials arguing that its efforts to support de-escalation have enhanced the country’s standing internationally and could create opportunities for deeper political and economic engagement with regional and global partners.
