Where We Are Going Today: Turfah – almond coffee in Riyadh

Finding authentic regional flavors in Riyadh is always exciting, especially when they bring back memories of home. For me, that experience came with Turfah, a takeaway concept specializing in traditional Hijazi-inspired treats and beverages.

With the arrival of the Hijri New Year, many families in the Hijaz region continue the cherished tradition of serving almond coffee, a distinctive white coffee infused with almonds.

It is a drink that carries nostalgia, warmth and a sense of celebration. Having grown up with this tradition, I was eager to find a place in Riyadh that could recreate that familiar taste.

After hearing recommendations from friends, I decided to try Turfah, and I am glad I did. Its almond coffee was easily one of the best I have tasted in the capital. The flavor was rich yet delicate, with the almonds adding a smooth, comforting character that felt authentic rather than overly sweet. At SR15 ($4) per cup, it is not the cheapest coffee option available, but the quality and uniqueness make it worthwhile.

I also sampled its umm ali dessert, a classic favorite across the region. Creamy, indulgent and satisfying, it was an ideal companion to the almond coffee. Together, they created a combination that felt both comforting and celebratory.

One of Turfah’s signature items is the golden honey toasted, consisting of sliced bread coated in a mixture of butter and honey. Priced at SR68 for six pieces, it is definitely on the expensive side. However, the generous coating of honey and butter gives it a rich flavor that many customers are likely to enjoy as a dessert to share.

For Riyadh’s hot summer weather, I highly recommend the iced hibiscus with cinnamon. Refreshing and aromatic, it strikes a pleasant balance between sweet and tangy notes.

The addition of cinnamon adds depth to the drink without overpowering the hibiscus, making it one of the most memorable items on the menu.

Another popular offering is the sparkle butter cookies box, which contains 40 cookies and is priced at SR135. The cookies are buttery, delicate and ideal for gatherings or gifting.

Turfah operates exclusively as a takeaway business, with orders available through delivery platforms such as Jahez and The Chefz.

While the prices may be higher than average, the business’ commitment to traditional Hijazi flavors and quality ingredients makes it stand out.
