Pakistan extends airspace ban on Indian aircraft to July 24

  • Pakistan banned its airspace for Indian aircraft in April 2025 as tensions escalated
  • Ban has forced Indian carriers to reroute international flights, absorb higher fuel costs

KARACHI: Pakistan has extended its airspace ban on Indian-registered aircraft till July 24, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) said in an advisory on Tuesday.

Pakistan banned its airspace for Indian aircraft on Apr. 23, 2025, after tensions escalated between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Both countries engaged in a days-long military conflict in May last year, with Pakistan extending the airspace ban since then numerous times.

The ban has forced Indian carriers to reroute international flights and absorb higher fuel and operational costs.

“The ban on Indian aircraft (both civil and military) will remain in effect from 5:50 p.m. on June 16 until 4:59 a.m. on July 24,” the NOTAM said.

A NOTAM is an official advisory containing information essential to personnel concerned with flight operations.

Pakistan’s ban has affected Indian carriers such as Air India, which operate long-haul flights to Europe and North America.

With such carriers forced to take longer routes, it has increased flight times and costs. Air India has been under mounting financial pressure, reporting a combined loss of about $1.05 billion in the 2024–2025 financial year, according to Reuters.

While the ceasefire between India and Pakistan has held for over a year since they engaged in conflict, tensions persist. The military leaderships of both countries have warned each other against carrying out misadventures.
