DUBAI: Art Jameel is set to present a cross-regional exhibition spanning Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Titled “Global Positioning System,” the two-part group show will open this May at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah, alongside a presentation at Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai.
The exhibition, which runs in Jeddah from May 20 to Oct. 17 and in Dubai from May 9 to Oct. 4, brings together more than 40 artists from over 20 countries, exploring how navigation systems shape contemporary life.
Through a wide range of works, the show examines mapping, mobility and the infrastructures that govern movement, while questioning their limitations and failures.
Curated by Indranjan Banerjee and Lucas Morin, “Global Positioning System” spans large-scale installations, conceptual works and research-driven projects.
Nora Razian, Art Jameel deputy director and head of exhibitions and programs, said: “For the first time we are presenting an exhibition that takes place across both our sites in Dubai and Jeddah.
“‘Global Positioning System’ queries the tools and systems we use to orient ourselves, highlighting the friction between cartographic representation and lived realities.
“GPS builds on Art Jameel’s commitment to facilitating cross-regional dialogue, where mobility and exchange are essential systems for supporting interconnectedness in our shared world.”
The Jeddah chapter features a diverse roster of international and regional artists, including Bani Abidi, Mahmoud Alhaj, Mona Hatoum and Nalini Malani. Abidi, Ana Amorim and Cinthia Marcelle will present works across both the Dubai and Jeddah editions.
In Dubai, the presentation at Jameel Arts Centre includes new commissions by artists Vishwa Shroff, Seher Naveed and Fatma Al-Ali, alongside international loans, including the filmmaker Harun Farocki’s large-scale video installation “Parallel I-IV (2012-2014).”
