RIYADH: Al-Mughmas Valley near Makkah is attracting a growing number of visitors as one of the region’s most prominent open natural sites, Saudi Press Agency stated in a new report.
Located east of the holy city, the valley stretches across a wide geographical area, where sand gullies, open plains and rocky hills create a varied landscape suited for hiking, exploration and recreation.
The destination has become increasingly popular during the cooler months, particularly after rainfall, when parts of the valley turn green and attract families, campers and photography enthusiasts.
The valley is home to vegetation typical of desert and semi-desert environments, with native trees adapted to high temperatures and limited rainfall.
These plants play a key environmental role, helping stabilize soil, reduce sand encroachment, provide shade and moderate temperatures, contributing to the sustainability of wildlife in the area, the SPA added.
The valley also serves as a habitat for various species, such as birds, insects and reptiles.
The site supports a range of activities, ranging from walking along natural trails, photography and environmental exploration, as well as educational trips that introduce visitors to local plant life and desert characteristics.
According to SPA, community engagement remains central to these efforts, with initiatives such as tree-planting and clean-up campaigns helping to promote environmental responsibility and reduce harmful practices.
With its natural diversity, the valley is seen as having strong potential to become a leading eco-tourism destination, supported by balanced infrastructure development and stronger collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders.
Authorities have stepped up efforts to protect the site through awareness programs encouraging visitors to follow environmentally responsible practices, such as avoiding damage to vegetation, refraining from lighting fires nearby and maintaining cleanliness.
