Saudi Arabia, GCC nations call for lasting peace after US-Iran truce

  • Gulf states including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman welcomed the announcement

DUBAI: Gulf nations on Wednesday called for sustained diplomacy following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with reactions reflecting both cautious optimism and assertions of strategic positioning.

Saudi Arabia welcomed the ceasefire announcement, praising what it described as “fruitful efforts” to reach the agreement. The Kingdom acknowledged statements by US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating the deal, including efforts linked to army chief General Asim Munir.

The Saudi foreign ministry reiterated its support for reaching a comprehensive agreement that addresses the underlying issues that have undermined regional security for decades.

Meanwhile, UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash said the Emirates had emerged stronger from the conflict, despite seeking to avoid it.

“The UAE emerged victorious from a war we sincerely sought to avoid,” Gargash wrote on X, adding that the country was now better equipped to navigate a complex regional landscape and shape future outcomes.

Qatar welcomed the ceasefire while stressing the urgent need to safeguard maritime security, calling for the protection of freedom of navigation and trade in line with international law to ensure the stability of global supply chains.

In Oman, officials emphasised mediation and long-term stability, with the foreign minister pledging support for efforts toward “strong and enduring regional security” and urging serious negotiations between Washington and Tehran to achieve lasting peace.

Kuwait also welcomed the truce, crediting diplomatic efforts in helping avert further escalation. The foreign ministry reiterated support for mediation aimed at restoring calm and expressed hope the ceasefire would lead to a comprehensive and sustainable settlement.

Kuwait also called for full adherence to the agreement, urging Iran and allied groups to cease hostile activities and respect state sovereignty. It stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law.
