RIYADH: Parrotfish season is currently bringing one of the most remarkable natural and cultural scenes in the Kingdom to Al-Hasis Beach, where nature and local heritage come together in a maritime tableau that recurs every year.
After a months-long journey from the Indian Ocean through the Arabian Sea and into the Red Sea, schools of parrotfish arrive at the Farasan Islands in an annual phenomenon.
They gather at Al-Hasis Beach, where shallow, warm waters provide ideal conditions for spawning — a natural wonder that sets the Farasan Islands apart, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.
Parrotfish, locally known as “harid,” are among the most striking and diverse marine species, living in coral reefs and playing a vital role in the ecosystem.
Known for their beak-like mouths and vibrant colors, they comprise over 90 species, each with unique shapes and hues, the SPA added.
The Farasan Islands host a unique event when large schools of parrotfish gather near the shore. Residents have long relied on traditional knowledge to anticipate their arrival, guided by a distinctive scent that drifts ashore after sunset on the 15th night of the lunar month.
The annual parrotfish catch, usually held at the end of April, is a vibrant celebration deeply rooted in the islands’ heritage, bringing together generations in a festive and time-honored tradition.
Farasan has finalized preparations for the 22nd Harid Nights event, scheduled to launch this Thursday.
The event showcases the islands as a growing destination for tourism and investment, highlighting their natural beauty and rich traditions.
It also reflects the deep connection between people and the sea as a source of livelihood and life.
Fishermen gather from early morning, using traditional methods such as nets and plant branches to organize collective fishing in a celebratory atmosphere accompanied by folk chants.
Harid Nights are filled with vibrant celebratory scenes in a tradition passed down through generations, with children participating alongside adults.
The beach also attracts large numbers of visitors who come to witness the event and enjoy the coastal atmosphere.
The season helps enhance the status of the Farasan Islands as a tourism and environmental destination, thanks to their unique natural diversity and scenic beaches, SPA noted.
It also serves as an annual occasion to highlight the importance of preserving the marine environment and ensuring the sustainability of its resources.
