DUBAI: Egyptian actress May Elghety is gearing up for the release of “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy,” an upcoming horror produced by Blumhouse, Atomic Monster and New Line Cinema.
“April 17th worldwide — Egypt gets it first on April 16th!” the actress wrote on Instagram on Monday.
In late March, lead star Egyptian-Palestinian actress May Calamawy shared a short trailer for the film.
The new feature from the award-winning Irish writer and director is set for release on April 17, with Calamawy and Elghety appearing alongside Veronica Falcon, Jack Reynor and Laia Costa.
The official logline reads: “The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”
It turns out the child has spent the time in a 3,000-year-old sarcophagus and has been transformed into a living mummy-like creature.
“Don’t worry, Grandma, it’s fun to be dead,” she says in one trailer.
Calamawy shared the chilling preview on Instagram, with the caption, “Would you welcome her home?” The clip features a series of snippets, including shots of a young girl emerging from a sarcophagus.
Cronin is best known for reviving the “Evil Dead” franchise with “Evil Dead Rise,” which grossed $147 million globally in 2023.
For her part, Elghety is an actress and EU Goodwill Ambassador in Egypt. In 2023, she starred in Disney’s animated sci-fi series “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire,” which follows futuristic stories across Africa.
The actress also starred in “Due Dating,” alongside actors Danielle Scott, Jade Asha and Alex Crockford. The movie was written by Asha and directed by Daniel Pacquette.
Elghety was born to parents Mohamed Elghety and Mona Barouma, who are both writers and TV presenters.
The 27-year-old actress started her career as a child. In 2013, she landed a lead role in “El-Kaserat,” a controversial TV series depicting the illegal act of child marriages in Upper Egypt. Her performance landed her the award for best upcoming actress at the Arab Drama Festival. -
