DUBAI: There’s a particular kind of movie magic born when performance and creative collaboration come together at their absolute peak. “Project Hail Mary” is the latest example, anchored by another stellar turn from Ryan Gosling, and helmed by directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
The film, adapted from Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, follows Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher turned reluctant astronaut tasked with saving Earth from an extinction-level threat: the Sun is slowly dying because of microbial “dots” that are eating it up. It’s a premise steeped in high-stakes sci-fi, but what sets the film apart is how deftly Lord and Miller balance that tension with humor — combining the mechanics of a sci-fi thriller with the warmth of an unlikely buddy comedy.
At the center of that success is the unlikely bond between Grace and Rocky — a spider-shaped alien brought to life through a remarkable blend of puppetry and performance by James Ortiz. Their friendship is genuinely moving, filled with humor and curiosity as they learn to communicate with each other.
Threaded through the sci-fi action and the bromance are flashbacks that reveal how Grace — once a brilliant molecular biologist sidelined into teaching for his unorthodox ideas — is pulled into the space mission by the straight-talking German technocrat Eva Stratt, played by the brilliant Sandra Huller.
The set pieces — from claustrophobic spacecraft interiors to the vast vistas of space — are gorgeously realized. Refreshingly, the film also trusts its audience to follow its more hardcore scientific concepts.
At times, the film lingers a little too long on certain sequences, and a tighter edit would have done wonders. The indulgent runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes occasionally tests your patience.
Still, these are minor quibbles about a film that gets so much right. “Project Hail Mary” is thrilling, laugh-out-loud funny and unequivocally heartfelt. This is a timely reminder that, even in the vast emptiness of space, connection remains the most powerful force of all.
