Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar condemn drone attack against UAE consulate in ‌Irbil

  • UAE foreign ministry says no casualty was reported from the attack

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan have condemned a drone attack targeting the UAE’s consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan’s ‌Irbil.

The UAE also issued an earlier statement condemning the attack.

Iraqi Kurdistan’s counter-terrorism service said late on Monday that ‌it had ‌downed three ‌drones ‌in Irbil, with debris from one of ‌the drones falling near the UAE consulate.

It said no casualties were reported.

Saudi Arabia, in a statement released through its foreign ministry, expressed its ‘strongest condemnation’ of the targeting of UAE’s consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan.

In a statement, the Jordanian foreign ministry emphasized the importance of “upholding international law and adhering to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

The ministry stressed that these frameworks require the protection of diplomatic missions and their personnel.

Qatar also expressed its “strong condemnation and denunciation” of the attack, and called it “a clear violation of all international norms and conventions.”

A UAE foreign ministry statement earlier said the attack “represents a dangerous escalation and a threat to regional security and stability,” adding that “targeting diplomatic missions and premises constitutes a flagrant violation of all international norms and laws.”

It also called on the Kurdistan regional government to investigate the circumstances of the attack, identify those responsible and hold them accountable.
