LONDON: Two members of the Syrian Internal Security Forces were killed and three injured on Tuesday by a landmine in Al-Sanamayn, a city in Daraa province in southern Syria.
They were on patrol near a site formerly used by the 9th Division, an elite unit under the regime of the former president, Bashar Assad, when they discovered antipersonnel mines and improvised explosive devices concealed among rocks.
One device detonated, killing two Al-Sanamayn Security Department officers, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported. Unexploded ordnance and landmines from the Civil War, which began in 2011 and continued until late 2024, continue to pose significant threats to security forces and civilians, it added.
Daraa was devastated by the war. Last week, the Syrian government reported that more than 95,000 homes in the province were damaged by the forces of the Assad regime during the conflict, 33,400 of which were completely destroyed.
