Riyadh Zoo roars back in thrilling return

  • More than 1,600 animals, 6 themed zones at revamped location

RIYADH: Riyadh Zoo reopened recently as part of Riyadh Season 2025, quickly becoming one of the capital’s most popular outdoor attractions. The revamped site is attracting families, tourists, and residents with its expanded layout, new experiences, and vibrant themed zones.

Spread across 161,000 sq. meters in Al-Malaz, the zoo takes visitors on a global journey through environments inspired by different continents — from tropical forests to pink lakes — while blending wildlife encounters with learning-focused activities.

Many visitors have commented on the site’s upgrades. Muskan Kureshi, who was exploring the zoo with her infant, said: “My baby is very happy seeing the zoo. There are many new attractions added this year and I’m enjoying my day so much. I’m from India and now living in Riyadh, and this time Riyadh Season has improved a lot. I’m enjoying all the lighting and everything around here.”

The site is home to more than 1,600 animals across 170 species in six themed zones: Pink Lake, Wild Adventure, Enchanted Forest, The Swamp, Ape Escape, and Almalaz Bay. Each zone mirrors real ecosystems with naturalistic enclosures, landscaping, and soundscapes, offering close-up moments with the wildlife.

A major highlight is the Elephant Experience, giving guests a front-row view of the animals splashing, foraging, and interacting.

The redesigned giraffe and African section now features an elevated bridge that brings visitors eye-to-eye with gentle giants like giraffes and elands. Children can enjoy animal feeding sessions, craft workshops, and interactive learning stations which are placed throughout the pathways.

Entertainment remains a core attraction, with daily main-stage shows such as the Silly Brothers, the Blue Clown Circus, Magician Show, and the Bubbles Show. Roaming performers, including Jungle Friends, Music Band and Drummers, and performers on flamingo stilts, add to the lively atmosphere.

The zoo also provides restaurants, food carts, shaded seating areas, retail shops, and dedicated play zones, encouraging guests to spend the full day at the location. Clearly marked pathways guide visitors smoothly through each section.

Boasting a daily capacity of 12,000 and operating hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Riyadh Zoo is among the largest daytime destinations during the season. Tickets are available through the Webook app.

Mohammed Rashid Ali, who has lived in Saudi Arabia for 17 years and was visiting with his wife and children, said: “We really enjoyed it and we are very excited. We are enjoying seeing tigers, elephants, giraffes, all of them. Riyadh Season has given us the chance to visit this place.”

Liza Bondar, who was visiting with her son Yusif, commented on the improvements at the site, and added: “It is my second time here, and I really like it so much. It looks much better than before. It is an amazing place and I’d highly recommend it for families, tourists, and visitors. It is a great place to spend the day.”

As a flagship Riyadh Season destination — and part of one of the world’s largest entertainment festivals — the zoo reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader push to develop tourist attractions.

With richer habitats and new programs to encourage appreciation of wildlife, Riyadh Zoo has emerged as a standout highlight of the 2025 season.
