Barcelona looks to banish Chelsea blues against Alaves in La Liga

  • The game will give Barcelona the chance to move ahead of leader Real Madrid in the Spanish standings
  • The Alaves game will be the second for Barcelona back at a Camp Nou still undergoing renovation

BARCELONA: After their humbling at Chelsea, Barcelona hope they can get back to winning ways when they host Alaves in La Liga on Saturday.
The game will give Barcelona the chance to move ahead of leader Real Madrid in the Spanish standings, a day before Xabi Alonso’s side visit Girona.
Barcelona have taken advantage of a couple of slips by Madrid to close the gap in La Liga to one point. But Hansi Flick’s side fell apart in a 3-0 loss at Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday.
“We have to accept the defeat and stay positive about what comes next,” Flick said.
Key matches
Flick’s focus will be on improving a defense that was picked apart in London, where it was clearly missing the leadership and smart play of Íñigo Martínez, who left for Saudi Arabia last summer.
Right back Jules Koundé conceded an own goal and central defender Ronald Araújo was sent off before halftime at Stamford Bridge.
The Alaves game will be the second for Barcelona back at a Camp Nou still undergoing renovation. Last weekend they beat Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in their first match at their stadium in more than two years.
Alaves have lost three of their last four league games, and two in a row, to sit 14th.
After Alaves, Barcelona will only get three days rest before they host Atletico Madrid in another Spanish league game between title hopefuls.
Madrid also have trouble in defense. They needed a hat trick from Kylian Mbappé to ensure a 4-3 win at Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Before that, Madrid had drawn against Elche and Rayo Vallecano in La Liga and lost 1-0 at Liverpool in Europe.
Villarreal are sticking close to the frontrunners. They are three points behind Madrid before visiting Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Players to watch
Barcelona fans will be watching Lamine Yamal, hoping he will have another strong performance after he was marked out of the Chelsea game by Marc Cucurella, a former youth player at the Camp Nou.
Mbappé aims to add to his goal tally at the relegation-threatened Girona. The France star leads La Liga with 13 and the Champions League with nine.
While Villarreal’s success is based on team play, young forward Alberto Moleiro with his four goals and two assists has emerged as one of the revelations of the league.
Out of action
Pedri González’s steady feet in Barcelona’s midfield were missing at Chelsea as he recovers from a muscle tear that has sidelined him for nearly a month.
If Pedri is back against Alaves, he could fill in a new hole left by Fermín López. Barcelona said Thursday that the midfielder will be out for two weeks due to a “small injury” in his lower right leg.
Off the field
Barcelona are due to hold presidential elections to chose a new executive board next summer, and two rival candidates have recently said they will run against incumbent Joan Laporta.

Saudi Pro League warns Al-Nassr’s Ronaldo no player is bigger than club

  • Ronaldo did not take part in the club’s SPL win at Al-Riyadh on Monday and is now set to miss Friday night’s clash against Al-Ittihad

RIYADH: The Saudi Pro League has warned Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo that “no individual – however significant – determines decisions beyond their own club” amid doubts over his future at Al–Nassr.

Ronaldo, reportedly unhappy at the club’s lack of transfer activity, did not take part in the club’s Saud Pro League win at Al-Riyadh on Monday and is now set to miss Friday night’s clash against Al-Ittihad.

In a statement issued to BBC Sport, a Saudi Pro League spokesperson said: “The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules.

“Clubs have their own boards, their own executives and their own football leadership. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. That framework applies equally across the league.”

The 40-year Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s match against Al-Riyadh on Monday amid reports he is on strike over the club’s lack of transfer activity.

Portuguese media outlet A Bola reported that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was unhappy that Al-Nassr, which is backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, has not strengthened its squad as it challenges for the league title.

“Cristiano has been fully engaged with Al–Nassr since his arrival and has played an important role in the club’s growth and ambition,” the Saudi Pro League spokesperson said.

“Like any elite competitor, he wants to win.

“But no individual – however significant – determines decisions beyond their own club.

“Recent transfer activity demonstrates that independence clearly. One club strengthened in a particular way. Another chose a different approach. Those were club decisions, taken within approved financial parameters.”

The Saudi Pro League spokesperson added: “The competitiveness of the league speaks for itself. With only a few points separating the top four, the title race is very much alive. That level of balance reflects a system that is working as intended.

“The focus remains on football – on the pitch, where it belongs – and on maintaining a credible, competitive competition for players and fans.”
