Dubai Basketball’s 1-point victory over Paris secures 10th straight home win

  • UAE club remain undefeated in debut EuroLeague season at Coca-Cola Arena
  • McKinley Wright delivered a standout performance, particularly in the fourth quarter, when he powered the comeback with an explosive scoring stretch

DUBAI: Dubai Basketball strengthened its standing as one of the EuroLeague’s toughest home teams after producing a resilient turnaround to defeat Paris Basketball 90-89 in round 13 at Coca-Cola Arena. The victory lifted the UAE club to remain undefeated in their debut EuroLeague season at Coca-Cola Arena — securing Dubai’s 10th home win this season.

The game opened in a difficult fashion for the hosts. Paris dictated the tempo from the first possession, striking twice from long range within the opening minute and using their trademark high pace to build a 15-point advantage after 10 minutes. But the 5,000-strong home crowd lifted the team when they needed it the most.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the second period. Dubai responded with renewed defensive intensity and a 14-point surge that completely changed the game’s rhythm. The home side held Paris scoreless for almost three minutes and capitalized at the other end, eventually heading into halftime with a 46-45 lead, their first of the night.

Dubai Basketball head coach Jurica Golemac commented on the hard-sought win, saying: “Personally, for me, this is one of the biggest victories in the history of Dubai Basketball. With so many absences, we stepped up. Even though we started very slow and very soft, we stepped up again, with the help of our fans, who were involved throughout the entire game.

“But I need to say that all the guys here are exceptional characters, and they believe in themselves. In sport, names don’t play — hustle, energy and intensity play. The most important thing, which we talk about all the time, is the never-give-up mentality. Never give up; always fight until the end, and that will always bring something better.”

The closing minutes showcased Dubai’s composure under pressure. Key outside shots, and an important late-game three from Justin Anderson, kept the home side within striking distance. With the score tight inside the last minute, Dubai executed more cleanly, converting crucial free throws and forcing a Paris offensive foul that swung the momentum decisively. Although Paris hit a long buzzer-beater to trim the final margin, Dubai had already done enough to secure the win.

McKinley Wright delivered a standout performance, particularly in the fourth quarter, when he powered the comeback with an explosive scoring stretch and finished with a career night. Filip Petrusev played a major role in the first-half turnaround, while Anderson’s timely shooting proved vital in several critical moments.

With the win, Dubai continues to turn Coca-Cola Arena into a difficult destination for opposing teams, further solidifying its strong position at the season’s midpoint. The team now looks ahead to its upcoming trip to Italy, where it will face Virtus Bologna on Dec. 5.

Stokes calls on England to ‘show a bit of dog’ in must-win Adelaide Test

ADELAIDE: Ben Stokes has called on England to “show a bit of dog” in the must-win third Ashes Test against Australia on Wednesday after “raw” conversations following heavy defeats in Perth and Brisbane.
The tourists have crashed to consecutive eight-wicket losses and must snap a 17-match winless streak in Australia at Adelaide Oval to keep the five-match series alive.
They have made just one change with Josh Tongue replacing fellow quick Gus Atkinson, while off-spinning allrounder Will Jacks kept his place ahead of Shoaib Bashir.
England skipper Stokes said after the Gabba defeat that Australia was “no place for weak men” and admitted to “raw” dressing room conversations in the aftermath.
“We don’t do getting into rooms and have big things up on the screen. We have proper, meaningful conversations. What’s been said has been said,” he told English media.
“I’ve done all the talking over the last two days that I needed to. All that stuff’s done now, so it’s about what gets seen out on the field in Adelaide this week.”
Stokes was called “the most competitive person I’ve ever come across” by former England captain Alastair Cook last week and the 34-year-old allrounder demanded more fight from his team.
“It’s just about trying to fight in every situation that you find yourself in, understanding the situation and what you feel is required for your team,” said Stokes.
“Just look at your opposition every single time and show a bit of dog. That’s fight to me. You’re giving yourself the best possible chance if you’ve got a bit of dog in you.”
He cited England’s battling third Test win against India at Lord’s in July as an example of the grit he wanted to see in Adelaide, with the hosts winning by 22 runs deep into day five after a time-wasting row.
“That’s exactly what I’m on about,” he said.
“We were probably in a situation where we would have to be absolutely perfect to win that game and we were.
“The attitude and the mentality toward that specific situation is what gave us the best chance of winning that game.”
Since arriving in Australia, England have been under intense media scrutiny and faced hostile crowds at Perth and Brisbane.
Just five of the players used so far had previously played an Ashes series in Australia and Stokes acknowledged it had been confronting for the newcomers.
“Honestly, I think so,” he said. “Now I feel everyone has experienced that and probably at its highest level, so we all know what it’s going to be like.
“So for the next three games there isn’t going to be any of that ‘I didn’t expect this’ or ‘it’s the first time I’ve had this’.”
