Forest beat Liverpool to add to English champions’ woes

  • The defeat at Anfield was Liverpool’s sixth loss in their last seven league matches
  • It was Forest’s biggest win at Anfield — and their third in six matches under new manager Sean Dyche

LIVERPOOL: Nottingham Forest won 3-0 away to Liverpool on Saturday to inflict a fresh blow on the champions’ hopes of defending their Premier League title.
The defeat at Anfield was Liverpool’s sixth loss in their last seven league matches and left them languishing in 11th place in the table, eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Brazilian defender Murillo gave strugglers Forest a 33rd-minute lead following a corner. Nicolo Savona doubled the visitors’ advantage early in the second half.
Morgan Gibbs-White sealed a Forest win at Anfield for the second successive season 12 minutes from time after he followed up Alisson’s save from Omari Hutchinson.
It was Forest’s biggest win at Anfield — and their third in six matches under new manager Sean Dyche — and Liverpool’s heaviest home defeat since losing 4-1 to Manchester City in 2021.
“Everyone is disappointed, like they should be, because losing at home to Nottingham Forest is, in my eyes, very bad,” Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk told Premier League Productions. “That’s the least I can say about it.
“Those goals we conceded are far too easy and we all have to look in the mirror. I’ve been at this club so long now and we’ve been through adversity. We will bounce back but it doesn’t happen overnight. I’m not a quitter and we will keep going.”

- ‘Psychological boost’ -

The victory lifted Forest out of the relegation zone.
“We thoroughly deserved the win and the dressing room is quite lively,” Forest captain Ryan Yates told Sky Sports.
Reflecting on Dyche’s influence, he said: “He’s been huge, him and his staff. They came in, embraced everything about the club. Brought that togetherness with the team and the fans, that’s massive at Forest.
Yates added: “It’s a big psychological boost getting out of the relegation zone but it’s harder staying out of it and that is what this club demands.”
Liverpool’s latest loss will strengthen the view of critics who argue the Reds’ £450 million ($589 million) summer transfer window spending spree has destabilized the squad.
Reds manager Arne Slot thrust British record signing Alexander Isak straight back in the team after a month out in a bid to speed up his return to match fitness, but the ploy did not work with the Sweden international looking well short of his best.
Liverpool were arguably the better side for the opening 30 minutes but fell behind after Murillo opened the scoring when a corner flicked off Van Dijk.
Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels saved from both Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah to preserve the visitors’ lead.
But a minute into the second half a Liverpool defense where midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was at right-back due to injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong conceded again.
Former Liverpool full-back Neco Williams found space out on the left and his cut back allowed Savona to steer home.
Salah tried to drag Liverpool back into the game, poking wide and then being bundled off the ball by Nikola Milenkovic in the penalty area.
But Alisson parrying Omari Hutchinson’s 78th-minute shot into the path of Gibbs-White not only helped created Forest history but helped the midfielder to a personal landmark as he scored in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.

Forever Young to defend Saudi Cup crown from stall 6

  • Trainer Yoshito Yahagi happy with position for 2025 hero at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Saturday

RIYADH: Forever Young (JPN) will emerge from gate six when bidding to defend his group one $20-million Saudi Cup crown at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Saturday.

The reigning champion was the penultimate horse to be given a barrier and only five or six remained when Japanese trainer Yoshito Yahagi picked out the starting berth.

“I think six is a good number,” Yahagi said. “We don’t have to change anything with tactics. Honestly, I feel a lot of pressure on my shoulders bringing a defending champion but Forever Young doesn’t feel any pressure at all.”

American Hall of Famer Bob Baffert is in Riyadh and Flavien Prat will guide Nysos (US) from gate 12, while Irad Ortiz Jr. and Nevada Beach (US) have drawn gate seven.

“I’d rather be on the outside than the inside,” Baffert said after drawing the wide gate for Nysos.

“As long as the horse shows up that is more important. I think he is a really good horse and has always shown brilliance, he’s a trier and knows where the wire is. From the outside he will have a clear run.”

“Gate seven is good for Nevada Beach too. We just didn’t want to be in the one-hole,” Baffert added.

Last year’s fifth-place finisher Rattle N Roll (US) raced from seven on that occasion but this time around Joel Rosario will steer Kenny McPeek’s 6-year-old from stall 11.

Kyoko Maekawa drew stall one for Sunrise Zipangu (JPN) who will be ridden by Oisin Murphy. The Japan Racing Association’s first female trainer was Yahagi’s assistant in Saudi Arabia when Panthalassa (JPN) won The Saudi Cup from stall one in 2023.

Noriyuki Hori’s Luxor Cafe (US) has a wider starting point in barrier 10.

Leading local contender Mhally (GB) will break from stall 13. “We are very happy with that draw, we wanted something on the outside,” said Sheikh Faisal Al-Sabah, son of owner Sheikh Abdullah Homoud Almalek Al-Sabah.

“Hopefully he proves himself on Saturday.”

Banishing (US) was described as a horse with “a heart of gold” by trainer David Jacobson’s son, Zachary, and the American raider will break from stall three, while the Brad Cox-trained Bishops Bay (US) will come from nine.

The Saad Aljenade-trained Star Of Wonder (US) will start from the same stall five that Emblem Road (US) won the race, while his stable companion Haqeet (US) is inside that in box two under Mickael Barzalona.

Ryan Moore is a notable jockey booking for the Sami Alharabi-trained Ameerat Alzamaan (GB) who breaks from four.

Thundersquall (GB) will start from the widest draw of all in 14 for trainer Muteb Almulawah and jockey Danny Tudhope, while Tumbarumba (US) and James Doyle will begin the richest race in the world from eight for Hamad Al-Jehani and Wathnan Racing.
