Pakistan stocks soar over 7,000 points amid easing geopolitical, domestic tensions

  • KSE-100 index jumps 7,032.60 points, or 4.44 percent, to close at 165,476.02 on Tuesday
  • Stocks rebound as investors cheer improved Pak-US ties, progress on Gaza ceasefire

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s benchmark share index jumped over 7,000 points on Tuesday, with analysts attributing the spike to easing geopolitical and domestic tensions, which lifted investor sentiment.

The KSE-100 index surged by 7,032.60 points, or 4.44 percent, to close at 165,476.02, compared to the previous close of 158,443.42.

Sana Tawfik, the Head of Research at Arif Habib Limited, said the index surged past the 165,000 level, marking one of the largest point gains in the history of the index.

“The rally was fueled by easing geopolitical and domestic political tensions, coupled with renewed investor interest as the results season commenced,” she told Arab News over the phone.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) fell sharply on Monday as cross-border hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan prompted broad-based selling across key sectors.

The two neighbors exchanged heavy cross-border fire over the weekend, leaving 23 Pakistani soldiers and over 200 Afghan Taliban fighters dead, according to the Pakistan military.

The country also witnessed clashes between the government and a religio-political party striving to march on Islamabad in the last few days before their movement was halted on the outskirts of eastern Lahore.

Meanwhile, Ahsan Mehanti, Chief Executive Officer of Arif Habib Commodities, said stocks showed a strong recovery as investors welcomed improving Pakistan-US relations, progress on the Gaza ceasefire deal and easing tensions with Afghanistan.

“Renewed hopes for a positive Pakistan-International Monetary Fund and World Bank review meeting for the release of an IMF tranche next month played a catalytic role in record bullish activity at the PSX,” he said.

Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb arrived in Washington on Sunday to attend the IMF and World Bank annual meetings and hold talks on investment, taxation and economic reforms.

Pakistan vows to enhance defense cooperation with Jordan during King Abdullah’s visit

  • The Jordanian king witnesses Pakistani military exercise, demonstrating multi-domain operations, coordinated maneuvers
  • Field Marshal Asim Munir expresses Pakistan’s resolve to jointly realize the mutual vision of a stable and peaceful region

KARACHI: Pakistan’s army chief on Sunday reiterated his country’s commitment to enhance defense cooperation with Jordan, the Pakistani military said, during a state visit by King Abdullah II to the South Asian country.

King Abdullah II arrived in Pakistan on Saturday on a two-day visit that marked a significant milestone in reinforcing the historic bonds of fraternity and brotherhood between Pakistan and Jordan.

He visited the Global Industrial and Defense Solutions (GIDS) conglomerate in Rawalpindi on Sunday, where he was received by Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and other senior Pakistani officials.

The Jordanian king was briefed on the structure, capabilities and product portfolio of GIDS, showcasing Pakistan’s progress in indigenous defense production, technological innovation, and potential avenues for bilateral defense cooperation.

“COAS (chief of army staff) underscored the strong defense partnership between Pakistan and the Hashmite Kingdom,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, said following King Abdullah’s visit to the Tilla firing ranges after GIDS.

“The Field Marshal reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to further enhancing military-to-military cooperation with Jordan and jointly realizing the mutual vision of a stable and peaceful region.”

The Jordanian king witnessed a joint fire and maneuver exercise at the ranges that demonstrated multi-domain operations, including conventional and air firepower, coordinated maneuvers as well as spectrum warfare capabilities supported by multi-purpose drones employed in various configurations and roles.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also graced the occasion, while Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defense Industry Vugar Valeh oglu Mustafayev was among the distinguished guests at the firing ranges, according to the ISPR.

The prime minister expressed Pakistan’s deep respect and affection for King Abdullah II and the people of Jordan.

“The visit [of King Abdullah] reflects the enduring friendship, mutual trust and a shared desire for peace and development,” Sharif was quoted as saying by the ISPR.

King Abdullah earlier conferred Jordan’s Order of the Military Merit of First Degree on Field Marshal Munir in recognition of his contributions to strengthening military cooperation between the two countries.
