Music Cities Awards lead convention as part of Riyadh Music Week

  • A number of initiatives and foundations from across the globe took home wins for their work in creating transformations across communities through music
  • Brazil’s music scene had a successful night as it took home two awards

RIYADH: Riyadh Music Week festivities continue in the capital as the fifth annual Music Cities Awards were held in the Middle East for the first time on Dec. 8 at Mayadeen Village.

A number of initiatives and foundations from across the globe took home wins for their work in creating transformations across communities through music.

Hosted by Saudi actor Hakeem Jumuah, the night kicked off with opening remarks by CEO of the Music Commission Paul Pacifico and CEO of Sound Diplomacy Music Events and Education, Luke Jones.

Jones told Arab News: “The Music Cities awards is the world’s leading (platform), and I think recognition of people doing fantastic and important policy work in the development of Music City, strategies, night time economy, and everything else that is needed to make music, entertainment and culture work in an economically viable and sustainable way around the world.

“So in Riyadh, that’s exactly what we are trying to build. It’s a real privilege and a pleasure for us to host this important award ceremony as we build our city with these important tenets in mind.”

With over 300 applications from 19 countries across six continents, this year’s competition highlights the vital role that music plays in shaping the cultural, economic, and social fabric of cities.

To the nominees and applicants this year, he said: “Your innovative projects and unwavering commitment to using music for the greater good are an inspiration to us all.

“It enriches communities, fosters creativity, and reminds us of music’s profound ability to connect. We encourage all of you to continue applying for the awards. It’s not just a competition, it is a growing database of inspiration and celebration of what is possible when using becomes a tool for transformation.”

The selection process was led by a high level global jury of 10 experts who work at the forefront of music and city development, including Helen Glengarry, music industry lead of the City of Gold Coast, Australia; Khadija El-Bennaoui, head of performing arts at the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi; Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, GRAMMY Award-winning engineer, producer, composer, and owner of Royal Studios; and Nada Alhelabi, the general manager of MDLBEAST Foundation in Saudi Arabia.

Brazil’s music scene had a successful night as it took home two awards. The city of Salvador, which was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Music due to its rich Afro-Brazilian cultural influences, won Best Global Music City, while The Brazilian Symphony Orchestra Foundation took the category for best initiative to support music education and career development.

Australian entities also took home big wins. Queensland Music Festival was named the Best Music Tourism Initiative for its flagship Queensland Music Trails, while Music Victoria, a prominent organization known for its advocacy, research, and professional development within the music industry, won Best Organization Or Individual Supporting Music In The City.

Best Initiative to Support Diversity and Inclusion in Music went to the Miami Music Project, Inc., while Central Florida Community Arts won Best Initiative Using Music to Improve Health and Wellbeing.

The French Bye Bye Plastic Foundation, a women-led grassroots nonprofit focused on eliminating single-use plastics in the music industry, won Best Initiative Using Music to Support Environmental Sustainability; The Best Initiative Using Music for Economic, Social or Community Development went to the Viña del Mar International Song Festival; and Best Night-Time Economy Initiative was won by Bristol Nights, a partnership project initiated by Bristol City Council to support the city’s nightlife and those working from 6 pm to 6 a.m.

Located in Toronto and Hamilton, Canada, Main Stage Rehearsal Studios won the title for Best Use of Music in Real Estate or City Planning, while the Best Digital Innovation to Support Musicians or Music in Cities went to Opulous, which has developed products that transform how users engage with the music industry.

The award show started the two-day Music Cities Convention, held Dec. 9-10, including a number of panels and workshops dedicated to discussing what it takes to create a solid foundation for a thriving music industry.

The festivities were organized by Music Cities Events, which is part of sound diplomacy events and education.

“This event is a rare opportunity for policies to be put on stages, alongside events like Soundstorm festival and XP, to give policy its rightful focus as the underpinning of everything else that we need to happen to have creative careers and successful environments,” said Pacifico.

REVIEW: Mo Amer’s comedy drama ‘Mo’ makes triumphant return with season two

DUBAI: Season two of Mo Amer’s semi-autobiographical comedy drama is apparently its last. Amer has said the events of the series had to stop before Oct. 7, 2023, to avoid the horrors that have since been perpetrated in Gaza overtaking the narrative. Though understandable, that’s a real shame, because “Mo” is one of the best shows on television, exploring incredibly complex and divisive topics — family, religion, imbalance of power, exile, mental health, parenthood, multiculturalism and much more — with an artful lightness of touch, without ever taking them lightly. In season two, the ensemble cast are once again excellent, always serving the story, never looking to outshine it.

Amer plays Mo Najjar, a Kuwait-born Palestinian refugee living in Houston, Texas. Mo, his mother Yusra (the superb Farah Bsieso), and his older brother Sameer (Omar Elba) have been waiting more than two decades to have their asylum case heard.

Season two begins with Mo in Mexico, six months after the events of season one saw him stranded there. He’s living with the aunts of his ex-girlfriend Maria (Mo believes the fact he told her to “move on” will not prevent them reuniting — he’s wrong), and his family’s asylum hearing is just days away, but bureaucracy is preventing him from returning to be with them.

In one of several examples of the way “Mo” tackles dark topics with rare grace and humor, Mo attempts to illegally cross back into the US but is captured by border patrol and incarcerated (though not before his country music impersonation nearly convinces his captors he’s a red-blooded American). When he does eventually get back ‘home,’ he finds the family olive oil business is thriving, and that Maria has indeed moved on, starting a relationship with an Israeli chef.

Seeing friends and family prospering without him isn’t something Mo is necessarily ready to celebrate. That’s one of the great things about the show: Amer is as comfortable pointing out Mo’s own failings — his neediness, his pride — as he is railing at, say, the Kafkaesque officialdom that plagues his family’s existence. “Mo” is beautifully balanced in so many ways — from the blend of tragedy and comedy to the mix of maddening realism and fantastical dream sequences. Even the family’s joyous return to Palestine in the finale must be weighed against their stoicism in the face of the iniquities visited on them by the Occupation.

“Mo” isn’t just a great show, but a necessary one.

A timeless tribute: Celebrating Mohammed Abdul Wahab at Ithra

DHAHRAN: The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, or Ithra, is honoring the legendary composer and singer Mohammed Abdul Wahab with a multi-day grand musical event, “Abdul Wahab: A Tribute to a Legend.”

The first show was held on Wednesday evening and will be performed live nightly until Feb. 8 at the Ithra Theater.

With a career spanning more than six decades, the Egyptian icon famously bridged the authenticity and rich heritage of Arabic music for generations — decades after his death.

Under the direction of Maestro Hisham Gabr, the event promises a masterful blend of classical and contemporary arrangements, breathing new life into Abdul Wahab’s most iconic compositions.

The performance featured a selection of Abdul Wahab’s timeless works, including “Khayef Aool Elly Fe Alby,” a 1929 classic with lyrics by Ahmed Abdel Mageed, originally performed by the composer himself. Another beloved piece, “Ya Mesafer Wahdak,” first performed in 1942 with lyrics by Hussein Elsayed, was also brought to the stage.

The concert includes “Amal Hayati,” a song immortalized by the legendary Umm Kalthoum in 1965 with lyrics by Ahmed Shafeek Kamel. The poetic masterpiece “Aghadan Alqak,” written by Alhady Adam and performed by Umm Kalthoum in 1971, further highlights Abdul Wahab’s remarkable ability to compose for the greatest voices of his time. A lighter, yet equally memorable piece, originally performed by Fouad Al-Mohandes in 1966 with lyrics by Hussein El-Sayed, adds a touch of charm to the evening’s repertoire.

The audience was treated to three Egyptian soloists; Mohamed Shatta, Ahmed Nasser and Hanan Essam, who came together for the grand finale song which got the entire crowd on their feet.

They ended with the romantic ballad “Ahwak,” made famous by Abdelhalim Hafez in the late 1950s, and which showcases the deep emotional resonance of Abdul Wahab’s compositions.

“I was singing along — we love Abdul Wahab. I always enjoyed his music,” attendee Amira Kashgary told Arab News after the show.

“I really enjoyed tonight’s concert because it was an opportunity to see Abdul Wahab, who represents an icon in Arabic culture, Arabic music. I grew up with his music. He is a musician for all generations.

“The performance was great, excellent in so many ways. The orchestra was fantastic,” she said.

“Ithra is really a cultural establishment that nourishes our souls and minds, and bodies as well,” she added.

DUBAI: US singing sensation Jennifer Lopez has been announced as the latest addition to the lineup of performers for Saadiyat Nights.

The global superstar is set to take the stage in the UAE capital on Feb. 20.

Fans can look forward to chart-topping tracks such as “If You Had My Love,” “Jenny From The Block,” “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” and “On The Floor.”

Fresh off her critically acclaimed Sundance world premiere of “Kiss of The Spider Woman,” Lopez is joining a star-studded lineup for the second edition of Saadiyat Nights, including Robbie Williams, Michael Buble, and Boyz II Men, with much-anticipated performances still to come from Christina Aguilera on Feb. 15, Gwen Stefani on Feb. 21 and Lionel Richie on Feb. 22.

DUBAI/ LOS ANGELES: The 2025 Grammys in Los Angeles saw “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo kick off proceedings in a gown by Saudi couturier Mohammed Ashi.

Accompanied by Herbie Hancock on piano, Erivo sang Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” while wearing a sculpted gown from the Paris-based designer’s Fall/ Winter 2024 collection.

She complemented her Ashi Studio dress with Messika jewelry and Christian Louboutin heels.

Erivo’s look hailed from Ashi Studio’s Fall/Winter 2024-25 collection, titled “Sculpted Clouds.”

At the ceremony on Sunday night, Beyoncé won album of the year for “Cowboy Carter,” delivering her — at last — the show’s elusive top award.

The superstar, who is both the most awarded and nominated artist in Grammys history, has been up for the category four times before.

In winning album of the year with “Cowboy Carter,” Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win the top prize in the 21st century. The last was Lauryn Hill with “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” 26 years ago. Before her was Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston. That means Beyoncé is only the fourth Black woman to win album of the year at the Grammys.

Members of the Los Angeles Fire Department presented Beyonce with the trophy Sunday, one of several times the show reflected the recent wildfires that burned thousands of homes.

“It’s been many, many years,” Beyoncé said in her speech. “I want to dedicate this to Ms. Martell,” she said, referencing Linda Martell, the performer who became the first Black woman to play the Grand Ole Opry, a music venue in Nashville, Tennessee.

“We finally saw it happen, everyone,” host Trevor Noah said, nodding to the long overdue achievement for one of music's transcendent artists.

Kendrick Lamar won song and record of the year for his diss track “Not Like Us” at the 2025 Grammys, taking home two of the night's most prestigious awards.

For a more exclusive gathering, Carttel offers a VIP Room — a private space equipped with the same games but on a smaller scale. Ideal for celebrations with friends or family, the room accommodates around 20 guests.

Carttel also hosts live music and dance performances from around the world.
