Jimmy White sets up round 3 clash with China’s Si Jiahui after vintage performance at Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters

  • ‘The Whirlwind’ defeated Andrew Higginson 4-1 to reach Sunday’s third round at the Green Halls in Riyadh
  • 32 matches locked in for third round with trio of ex-world champions in action

RIYADH: Snooker legend and World Snooker Tour veteran Jimmy White produced a vintage performance to reach round three of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters on Saturday, overcoming fellow Englishman Andrew Higginson 4-1.

The 10-time ranking event winner and former UK and Masters champion stormed into a 3-0 lead before booking a third-round match against China’s world No.22 and former world championship semifinalist Si Jaihui.

Saturday’s round two action also saw Polish prodigy Antoni Kowalski reach the third round with a commanding 4-1 victory against Habib Sabah. The 20-year-old was in high spirits after the match, declaring that the time is now for professional snooker’s fastest-rising talents to make an impact in the sport’s biggest international event.

“We will be trying to set records,” Kowalski said. “I think this is the time that the new generation comes up to kick out Ronnie and other players. Ronnie has to end sometime; he is already in his late 40s. We will try our best, for sure.”

The Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters continues on Sunday with 32 matches locked in across round three, featuring former world champions Neil Robertson, Graeme Dott and Stuart Bingham. Coverage is being broadcast in 200 countries to a global audience exceeding 500 million, with an almost $640,000 (SR 2.4 million) first prize awaiting the tournament winner.

Biker Edgar Canet enjoys dream Dakar start

  • ‘I was super fast and super happy with this feeling. It’s the best way to start the rally’

YANBU: Spaniard Edgar Canet made a dream Dakar Rally debut on Saturday when the 20-year-old rookie topped the times in the prologue of motorsport’s most grueling event in Saudi Arabia.
The KTM factory rider ended the 22 km ride around Yanbu three seconds clear of teammate and defending champion Daniel Sanders with Honda’s American rider Ricky Brabec, the 2024 winner, five seconds adrift.
“I was super fast and super happy with this feeling. It’s the best way to start the rally,” said Canet.
Sanders was relieved to get his title defense up and running.
“Happy to be here at the start line and get the prologue done. It was a lot faster than expected, but not so technical, so it was hard to make up time,” the Australian said.
“It was full gas the whole time, so I’m sure there were really close times. It’s good to get that out of the way and get into a stage tomorrow.”
In the car category, Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar did the best of the big names, crossing eight seconds adrift in fourth. Defending champion Yazeed Al-Rajhi of Saudi Arabia was 14sec off the pace.
