Pakistani PM meets Saudi, UAE envoys, urges Muslims to adopt ‘united voice’ for Gaza

  • UAE ambassador formally invites Kakar to upcoming COP28 conference to be held from Nov. 30-Dec. 12 in Dubai
  • Kakar conveys “deep appreciation” for Saudi leadership for hosting OIC Extraordinary Summit on situation in Gaza

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar held separate meetings with the Saudi and UAE envoys to Islamabad on Monday, and called for Muslim nations to speak with a “united voice” against Israeli attacks in Gaza.

Israel has launched a war on Gaza since Oct. 7 after Hamas fighters rampaged through southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking some 240 hostages. Israel retaliated by enforcing a strict blockade of the enclave, and carrying out airstrikes and ground attacks that Palestinian officials say have killed around 13,000 people, including at least 5,500 children.

“The Prime Minister urged Muslim countries to speak with a united voice to urge the international community to end the violence and brutal murder of innocent civilians in Gaza at the hands of Israeli Occupation forces,” Kakar’s office said in a statement released after his meeting with Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al-Zaabi, UAE’s ambassador to Islamabad.

The envoy also presented a formal invitation to Kakar for the upcoming 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly referred to as COP28, to be held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai.

“He said that Pakistan was one of the leading countries in climate change negotiations and the UAE was hopeful that Pakistan would play its part in ensuring the success of COP-28,” PMO said, quoting Al-Zaabi.

Separately, the PM met Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Pakistan Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki and conveyed his “deep appreciation” for Saudi leaders for hosting the OIC Extraordinary Summit earlier this month to discuss the situation in Gaza.

“He lauded the role of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman in building historic consensus among Arab and Islamic countries,” PMO said.

“He reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong support to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the violence in Gaza and stopping the brutality unleashed by Israel on innocent Palestinians.”

Kakar’s meeting with the Saudi envoy came as Arab and Muslim ministers called on Monday for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, as their delegation visited Beijing on the first leg of a tour to push for an end to hostilities and to allow humanitarian aid into the devastated Palestinian enclave.

Pakistan U19 to open tri-series against Afghanistan on Saturday in Zimbabwe

  • Pakistan enter the tournament as U19 Asia Cup champions after beating India by 191 runs in Dubai
  • The tri-series is seen as key preparation for next month’s U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s under-19 cricket team will begin their tri-series campaign against Afghanistan on Saturday in Harare, using the tournament as a key preparation for next month’s ICC Men’s U19 World Cup co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Pakistan, the reigning ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup champions, are competing in the 50-over tri-series alongside Afghanistan and hosts Zimbabwe, with each team playing the others twice before the top two advance to the final on Jan. 6.

Pakistan won the eight-team Asia Cup in Dubai earlier this month, beating India by 191 runs in the final, and will play a minimum of four matches in the tri-series, starting at Harare Sports Club on Saturday.

“The Asia Cup was a good win for us and the players showed great morale and intensity,” Pakistan captain Farhan Yousaf said, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). “The tri-series is very important for the players and will help us find the right combinations ahead of the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup.”

Pakistan will face Zimbabwe on Dec. 29 before meeting Afghanistan again on Jan. 2, followed by a second match against the hosts on Jan. 4. Matches will be played across venues in Harare, including Harare Sports Club, Prince Edward School and Sunrise Sports Club.

The tri-series is being seen as an important warm-up ahead of the U19 World Cup, which will be held from Jan. 15 to Feb. 6. Pakistan are placed in Group C and will play all their group-stage matches in Harare.

“The conditions here are similar and will be beneficial for our World Cup preparations,” Yousaf said. “Both teams in the tournament are strong and competitive and we respect every opposition as we look forward to a competitive event.”

Pakistan will open their World Cup campaign against England on Jan. 16, followed by matches against Scotland and Zimbabwe, with the Super Six stage beginning on Jan. 25 and the final scheduled for Feb. 6 at Harare Sports Club.
