ISLAMABAD: Rain interrupted play once again in Colombo on Monday as Pakistan struggled to chase India’s mammoth 357-run target, losing opener Imam-ul-Haq and skipper Babar Azam early on as the two sides locked horns during the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023.
Indian batters Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul smashed centuries to ensure India finished at 356/2 from 50 overs, pummeling Pakistani bowlers all over the park. When Pakistan came out to bat, pace and sharp swing from Indian bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah troubled the Pakistani openers.
Shubman Gill caught Haq off an excellent Bumrah delivery that caught the edge of the Pakistani batter’s bat, giving India their first breakthrough. The left-handed opener scored only 9 runs from 18 balls before he departed for the pavilion.
Azam came out to bat next and never looked comfortable facing Bumrah. The right-arm Indian pacer left the Pakistani captain clueless on various instances with his bounce, and pace, swinging the ball sharply. It was, however, India’s all-rounder Harik Pandya who dismissed Azam via a ball that jagged in sharply from outside off-stump to castle his stumps.
Azam scored 10 runs from 24 balls before he was clean bowled by Pandya. Rain pelted down after 11 overs with Pakistan on 55/2 with opener Fakhar Zaman (14 runs from 22 balls) and Mohammad Rizwan (1 run from 2 balls) at the crease.
“Rain stops play at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on the social media platform X.

Before Kohli and Rahul smashed 122 and 111 runs respectively, India had earlier gotten off to an impressive start on Sunday with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill making a century-stand. Pakistan vice-captain Shadab Khan got the first breakthrough for the tournament hosts, removing the Indian captain for 56. Pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi then dismissed Gill for 58, and that was the final wicket Pakistan took during that innings.
Afridi finished with figures of 1/79, Khan 1/71, Faheem Ashraf 0/74 and Iftikhar 0/52 from 5.4 overs as the Pakistani bowlers took a battering at the hands of the Indian batters. Naseem Shah was the pick of the Pakistani bowlers, 0/53 from 9.2 overs at an economy rate of 5.68.
“Very special for us,” Gill said after India’s innings came to a close. “To score century in these conditions (KL) was magnificent. Virat’s century and 13,000 runs show he’s an inspiration.”
Azam was deprived of pacer Haris Rauf, who was rested during the match as a precautionary measure after he suffered a strain in his right flank, the PCB said in a statement.
“He was subsequently taken for a precautionary MRI, which revealed no tear,” the PCB said. “He is under the observation of the team’s medical panel.”
