Saudi Arabia’s Al-Jubeir thanks Uruguay for Riyadh Expo 2030 bid support

RIYADH: Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir has thanked the government of Uruguay for its support for the Kingdom’s candidacy to host Expo 2030 following meetings in the South American country on Wednesday.

Al-Jubeir met with Vice President Beatriz Argimon and foreign minister Francisco Pustecho in Montevideo, Kingdom’s foreign ministry said.

Uruguay joins the ranks of countries around the world expressing their support for Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the expo.

Riyadh’s bid to host the event faces competition from Busan in South Korea, Rome, and Odessa in Ukraine.

Al-Jubeir and Argimon reviewed bilateral cooperation between the countries and discussed current regional and international developments.

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between their countries and ways to develop them.

Al-Jubeir, who is also the Kingdom’s climate envoy, met Robert Bouvier, Uruguay’s environment minister, and reviewed environmental initiatives in the two nations.

Al-Jubeir briefed Bouvier about Saudi efforts to preserve the environment and mitigate climate change, specifically the Saudi Green and the Middle East Green Initiatives, the Kingdom’s comprehensive plan to tackle the impact of global warming. 

On Tuesday, Al-Jubeir met Paraguayan president-elect, Santiago Pena Palacios, congratulating him on his election and passing on the best wishes of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. They also discussed ways to further strengthen links between Saudi Arabia and Paraguay in all fields.

Saudi Arabia condemns militant attack on Pakistani police

  • Five Pakistani police personnel were killed on Tuesday when their van was ambushed in a bombing and shooting attack claimed by the militant Pakistani Taliban

RIYADH: The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday has condemned an attack that targeted Pakistani police in the country's northwest, killing five personnel. 

Five Pakistani police personnel were killed on Tuesday when their van was ambushed in a bombing and shooting attack claimed by the militant Pakistani Taliban.

“The Kingdom reiterates its total rejection of all terrorist and extremist acts and its condemnation of attempts to undermine the security and stability of Pakistan and it’s brotherly people,” a statement by the foreign ministry said.

The ministry also expressed the kingdom’s “sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Pakistan in this painful loss.”
