Australian Test summer featuring Pakistan to start later than usual

  • Pat Cummins' team will play Babar Azam's side in three Tests starting in Western Australia on December 14
  • Australia then meet the West Indies, for the second time in as many summers, in Adelaide from January 17

SYDNEY: Perth Stadium will host Australia's first Test of the 2023-24 summer in mid-December against Pakistan in one of the latest starts to their home season in decades, the schedule unveiled Monday showed.

Pat Cummins' team will play Babar Azam's side in three Tests starting in Western Australia on December 14, followed by the traditional Boxing Day clash in Melbourne and then Sydney to kick off a new cycle of the World Test Championship.

They then meet the West Indies -- for the second time in as many summers -- in Adelaide from January 17 before Brisbane's Gabba hosts the Caribbean side in the only day-night Test from January 25.

Brisbane and Adelaide usually host Tests in November-December.

According to Cricket Australia, it will be the latest start to a men's Test summer of five or more matches since the Ashes that began at the Sydney Cricket Ground on December 19, 1924.

The new-look schedule is down to Australia remaining in India for a bilateral white-ball series after the one-day World Cup in October-November.

Following the Tests, they will meet the West Indies in three one-dayers and three T20s throughout February, with Canberra and Hobart among the venues.

"Cricket provides the sights and sounds of the summer and brings Australians together like no other sport and we can't wait to welcome fans to watch world class cricket next season," Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley said.

Australia's world champion women's team, led by Meg Lanning, will bookend the international season, starting with a T20 and ODI series against the West Indies in October.

This will be followed by a multi-format series against South Africa, including their first-ever Test from February 15-18 at the WACA Ground in Perth.

Forest face Fenerbahce, Celtic draw Stuttgart in Europa League play-offs

  • Fenerbahce promise to be a tough test as they are unbeaten in the Turkish Super Lig
  • The winner of that tie will play either Real Betis or Midtjylland in the last 16

PARIS: Nottingham Forest face a daunting trip to Istanbul after being drawn Friday to play Fenerbahce in the knockout phase play-offs of the Europa League, while Celtic must take on German giants VfB Stuttgart.
Forest, who sit just above the relegation zone in the Premier League, finished 13th out of 36 teams in the Europa League and so were seeded for the play-off draw.
However, Fenerbahce promise to be a tough test as they are unbeaten in the Turkish Super Lig this season, even if they sit three points behind leaders Galatasaray in the table.
Their squad includes former Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, Spain star Marco Asensio and France midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.
Forest, who will be hoping to return to the Turkish city for the final in May, will nevertheless draw encouragement from the fact Aston Villa beat Fenerbahce 1-0 at their Sukru Saracoglu stadium just last week.
The winner of that tie will play either Real Betis or Midtjylland in the last 16 — Forest lost at home to the Danes in the league phase in October.
Celtic secured qualification for the play-offs after beating Dutch side Utrecht 4-2 on Thursday to finish 21st. They will host Stuttgart, currently fifth in the Bundesliga, in the first leg on February 19 before the return in Germany on February 26.
The winners will play Portuguese opposition in the last 16, with either Porto or Braga waiting for them.
Other ties in the play-offs include Bologna of Serie A playing Brann Bergen of Norway and Lille taking on Red Star Belgrade.
Aston Villa are among the eight teams straight through to the last 16, and will play one of Lille, Red Star Belgrade, PAOK or Celta Vigo in that round.
