Pakistani-American New York cop dies after being shot in off-duty robbery incident

  • Adeed Fayaz was rushed to hospital in Brooklyn after he was shot by a robber on Saturday night
  • NYPD says man wanted for killing officer was taken into custody but charges were pending

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani-American officer of the New York Police Department (NYPD) has died after he was shot in the head last week during an off-duty robbery incident, the city’s police commissioner announced on Wednesday morning.

The slain officer, identified as 26-year-old Adeed Fayaz, was rushed to a hospital in Brooklyn after he was shot by robbers on Saturday night.

The NYPD’s Chief of Detectives, James Essig, said the officer been in contact with a person selling a car on Facebook’s Marketplace for $24,000, according to the state-owned news agency, Associated Press of Pakistan (APP). On Saturday night, Fayaz, along with his brother-in-law, went to meet the seller who jokingly asked if any of the two buyers were carrying a gun. Both men denied having any weapons on them. The seller subsequently held Fayaz in a headlock, pointed a gun at his head, and demanded he pay him the money.

When the officer told the perpetrator he had no money, he pointed the gun at the brother-in-law, Essig added. But as Fayaz managed to break free, the perpetrator shot him in the head and fled while continuing to fire toward the officer and his relative.

“Police Officer Adeed Fayaz was a father, a husband, a son, and a protector of our great city. [He] was shot Saturday night and he tragically succumbed to his injuries today,” Keechant Sewell, Police Commissioner of the City of New York, announced in a Twitter post.

“Our Department deeply mourns his passing, and his family and loved ones are in our prayers,” he added.

The Pakistan Consulate General in New York also expressed condolences with the family and colleagues of the slain officer.

“We honor his service and mourn his loss. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and New York law enforcement community during this difficult time,” it said on Twitter.

Following the incident, the NYPD offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and announced on Tuesday evening that a suspect had been taken into custody but charges were pending at that time.

There are about 500 police officers of Pakistani origin serving in the NYPD.

Pakistan U19 to open tri-series against Afghanistan on Saturday in Zimbabwe

  • Pakistan enter the tournament as U19 Asia Cup champions after beating India by 191 runs in Dubai
  • The tri-series is seen as key preparation for next month’s U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s under-19 cricket team will begin their tri-series campaign against Afghanistan on Saturday in Harare, using the tournament as a key preparation for next month’s ICC Men’s U19 World Cup co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Pakistan, the reigning ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup champions, are competing in the 50-over tri-series alongside Afghanistan and hosts Zimbabwe, with each team playing the others twice before the top two advance to the final on Jan. 6.

Pakistan won the eight-team Asia Cup in Dubai earlier this month, beating India by 191 runs in the final, and will play a minimum of four matches in the tri-series, starting at Harare Sports Club on Saturday.

“The Asia Cup was a good win for us and the players showed great morale and intensity,” Pakistan captain Farhan Yousaf said, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). “The tri-series is very important for the players and will help us find the right combinations ahead of the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup.”

Pakistan will face Zimbabwe on Dec. 29 before meeting Afghanistan again on Jan. 2, followed by a second match against the hosts on Jan. 4. Matches will be played across venues in Harare, including Harare Sports Club, Prince Edward School and Sunrise Sports Club.

The tri-series is being seen as an important warm-up ahead of the U19 World Cup, which will be held from Jan. 15 to Feb. 6. Pakistan are placed in Group C and will play all their group-stage matches in Harare.

“The conditions here are similar and will be beneficial for our World Cup preparations,” Yousaf said. “Both teams in the tournament are strong and competitive and we respect every opposition as we look forward to a competitive event.”

Pakistan will open their World Cup campaign against England on Jan. 16, followed by matches against Scotland and Zimbabwe, with the Super Six stage beginning on Jan. 25 and the final scheduled for Feb. 6 at Harare Sports Club.
