Pakistan frustrate New Zealand's hopes of winning as Karachi Test ends in draw

  • Pakistan declared at 311-8 in second innings to set New Zealand a 137-run target
  • Ish Sodhi takes 6 wickets, Imam-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed score half-centuries

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan managed to avoid a fifth consecutive Test defeat on home soil against New Zealand on Friday, drawing the first of the two-Test match series against the Kiwis in Karachi.

New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi took six wickets to put Pakistan on the back foot, as the green shirts' batting order didn't put up much resistance at 206-7 after impressive half-centuries from Imam-ul-Haq (96) and former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed (53).

However, Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Wasim put up an impressive partnership to ensure Pakistan extended their lead against New Zealand to over 100 runs. Shakeel scored an unbeaten 55 while Wasim made 43 before he was dismissed by Sodhi.

Mir Hamza remained unbeaten on 3 as Pakistan skipper Babar Azam declared with just a lead of 136 over New Zealand. With only 15 overs remaining in the day, the Black Caps tried to win the match by playing aggressive cricket.

However, they lost Michael Bracewell to mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, who clean bowled him. Devon Conway scored 18 from 16 while Tom Latham scored 35 from 24 balls before the match ended. New Zealand finished on 61/1 after 7.3 overs at stumps on Day 5.

Pakistan have lost two Test home series this year, one against Australia (1-0) and the other against England (3-0). A loss today would have been Babar Azam XI's fifth consecutive loss on home soil this year.

Following the England whitewash, cricket analysts and critics have questioned skipper Azam's captaincy and demanded a new leader be appointed for the national men's squad for the Test format.

International Cricket Council in talks to revive India-Pakistan T20 World Cup clash

  • Pakistan face two-point loss and net run-rate hit if they forfeit Feb. 15 match
  • ICC seeks dialogue after Pakistan boycott clash citing government directive

NEW DELHI, India: The International Cricket Council is in talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board to resolve the boycott of its T20 World Cup match against India on February 15, AFP learnt Saturday.

Any clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is one of the most lucrative in cricket, worth millions of dollars in broadcast, sponsor and advertising revenue.

But the fixture was thrown into doubt after Pakistan’s government ordered the team not to play the match in Colombo.

The Pakistan Cricket Board reached out to the ICC after a formal communication from the cricket’s world body, a source close to the developments told AFP.

The ICC was seeking a resolution through dialogue and not confrontation, the source added.

The 20-team tournament has been overshadowed by an acrimonious political build-up after Bangladesh, who refused to play in India citing security concerns, were replaced by Scotland.

As a protest, Pakistan refused to face co-hosts India in their Group A fixture.

Pakistan, who edged out Netherlands in the tournament opener on Saturday, will lose two points if they forfeit the match and also suffer a significant blow to their net run rate.

India skipper Suryakumar Yadav said this week that his team would travel to Colombo for the clash.

Pakistan and India have not played bilateral cricket for more than a decade, and meet only in global or regional tournaments.
