ISLAMABAD, 17 June — The US Ambassador to Islamabad, William B. Milam, reiterated the US demand for an early restoration of democracy in Pakistan.

Chief Executive Gen. Musharraf has promised he would abide by the Supreme Court ruling that calls for return to civilian rule by October 2002.

A three-member PML-Q team led by its Senior Vice President Ejazul Haq called on the US ambassador here on Friday and discussed the political situation in Pakistan.

Abdul Majeed Malik and Gohar Ayub Khan were also present at the meeting. Ejaz said the US ambassador was upbeat about the upcoming meeting between Atal Behari Vajpayee and Gen. Pervez Musharraf. Milam, however, said the United States was in no way involved in these parleys.

The two-hour talks mainly focused on  internal affairs of the country with the US ambassador stressing that the process of talks between the two countries on Kashmir was necessary to resolve the issue.

Ejaz said the army government had dropped the option of restoring assemblies.

He claimed that his faction would have enjoyed two-thirds majority had the assemblies been restored.

He underscored the need for the military rulers to come up with a concrete plan for an early return to civilian rule.
