RAWALPINDI, 27 May — Former Navy Chief Mansurul Haq, facing graft charges, on Friday expressed his willingness to make a deal with the National Accountability Bureau and pay back the money he had received as kickbacks and commission in defense deals.

Najma Mansur, wife of the former navy chief, filed a petition in the Accountability Court No 1, Rawalpindi, seeking “plea bargain” and a deal with the NAB. Judge Rustam Ali Malik of the accountability court asked the NAB to give its reaction to the request by June 7 — when Mansur’s 14-day remand will also end. The court also issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of Amir Lodhi, a co-accused in the case.

Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan and Iqtidar Ali Hashmi are defense counsel for the former navy chief. They will be assisted by Altaf Hussain and Sadia Abbasi.

Under the NAB law, an accused is allowed to pay back the amount he has allegedly acquired through corrupt practices. The former navy chief allegedly received $ 3.36 million as commission in a defense deal.

According to the NAB, the amount was stashed in an offshore company, M/s Titan Europe in Gibraltar. Subsequently, another company, M/s Foraker, was established and the former navy chief’s share was transferred from the account of M/s Titian Europe to that in M/s Foraker.

The money was later transferred to another offshore company, M/s Moylegrove, which was owned by Mansur.

Mansur also requested the court that he be shifted to some other place near Islamabad as he wanted to see his family frequently.

The former navy chief is being kept in a police rest house near Sihala, 25 kilometers from Islamabad.
