Bianca Belair ‘psyched’ at return to Riyadh for WWE’s Crown Jewel

  • Raw title holder tells Arab News Mayman Show that she seeks to defend title on November 5th

RIYADH: Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair is set for a return to Riyadh on Nov. 5 for the WWE’s Crown Jewel event, a trip which has excited her for competitive and cultural reasons.

“I’m very psyched to be back in and now this will be my third time going back to Saudi Arabia. So it’s a show that we all now look forward to because we know that it’s going to hopefully continue to keep happening.

“It’s one of the bigger premium live events. So I’m excited to come back and I want to just come back and experience more culture too.” She also wants to experience the country’s “amazing” food, she told The Mayman Show, a podcast produced by Arab News

Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia is one of two international dates announced by the WWE. The other event will be held on Sep. 3 in Cardiff, Wales, titled Clash at the Castle.

Belair said she felt honored to be part of the WWE’s global shows, and praised the company for having faith in their women stars. “We have such an extensive roster, so much talent on the roster as far as the women (are concerned),” she said. She said the WWE’s Elimination Chamber held this past February in Jeddah, featured the most women ever on a show. “So that speaks volumes of how extensive and deep our roster goes.

FASTFACT

Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia is one of two international dates announced by the WWE.

“You know, we have so many amazing women and to be one of the women to represent WWE and represent women in Saudi Arabia is one thing. But to be the woman that stands on top and wins the whole entire Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia, that then punched my ticket to WrestleMania (was) amazing, but to do it in Saudi Arabia, like I said, where I feel like the moment is way bigger than me ... I love being a part of moments when it’s not just about me or going after the title or getting a WrestleMania opportunity, but where there’s representation, where history is being made, where moments are being made for people to remember and to affect people and inspire people,” she said.

In terms of the competition, she would like nothing better than to take on and defeat Charlotte Flair, whether in Riyadh or Cardiff. Flair is the only opponent still missing on her record, having already defeated three of the other four Horsewomen — Bayley, Becky Lynch, and Sasha Banks.

“Everyone knows that when I first came in, she was one of the main ones that I was always saying that I looked up to.” One of her main goals is now to finally beat Flair, she said.

Belair is the second African American in the WWE after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to win a Royal Rumble match. She has won the Smackdown Women’s Championship, and was ranked third in the top 10 wrestlers in 2021 by Sports Illustrated. She transitioned from CrossFit to become a WWE Superstar after training at the firm’s performance center.

PSG move top with nervy 3-2 win at bottom club Metz

  • PSG are on 36 points, two ahead of Lens who host Nice on Sunday
  • PSG struggled to create any early chances against Metz who have the worst defensive record

LONGEVILLE-LES-METZ, France: Paris St. Germain moved provisionally top of Ligue 1 with a 3-2 win at bottom club Metz on Saturday where the champions twice had a two-goal cushion cut and Goncalo Ramos, Quentin Ndjantou and Desire Doue were all on the scoresheet for the visitors.
PSG are on 36 points, two ahead of Lens who host Nice on Sunday while Metz remain bottom of the standings with 11 points.
PSG struggled to create any early chances against Metz who have the worst defensive record in the league this season, conceding 34 goals in their 15 previous games, but finally found a way through in the 31st minute.
Lee Kang-in played a one-two from a short corner before floating the ball toward the six-yard area where Ramos steered his header into the bottom corner.
PSG scored their second eight minutes later. Ibrahim Mbaye played a pinpoint pass across the box for Ndjantou to slide in and net his first goal for the club. The 18-year-old became PSG’s 17th different goalscorer in Ligue 1 this campaign.
Ramos wasted a gilt-edged chance to score another goal minutes earlier when his touch let him down as he tried to round the keeper and, out of nowhere, three minutes before the break Metz pulled one back.
Habib Diallo had a shot blocked in the box and when the ball came out to Jessy Deminguet he smacked a half-volley into the roof of the net to set up a more intriguing second half.
Metz keeper Jonathan Fischer denied Ndjantou, Ramos and Lee as PSG looked to kill off any hopes of a Metz comeback after halftime but the hosts almost found an equalizer before the hour mark.
Diallo volleyed narrowly wide and moments later, PSG keeper Matvey Safonov got down well to parry away a Koffi Kouao strike.
But, just when the hosts were enjoying their best period, PSG launched a counter attack from the resulting corner which sent substitute Doue through on goal and he made no mistake with a composed finish in the 63rd minute.
Mbaye’s shot rocked the crossbar as PSG began to turn the screw and Fischer made another fine save from Doue’s ferocious strike.

METZ MOMENT OF MAGIC
Metz refused to bow and nine minutes from time the home side created a beautiful goal to set up a nervy ending for the visitors.
Giorgi Tsitaishvili made a bursting run with the ball into the box from the wing and although he momentarily lost possession, Gauthier Hein played a clever backheeled pass back to Tsitaishvili who rifled his shot into the far corner.
PSG held on, but Metz will take satisfaction from their performance and if they can produce this type of display against lesser sides, they might be able to avoid a swift return to Ligue 2.
