Two Pakistani soldiers killed in militant attack in restive northwest

  • Militants targeted security forces in Sararogha area of South Waziristan
  • The Pakistan Army was carrying out a clearance operation in the vicinity

ISLAMABAD: Two Pakistan soldiers were killed in a militant attack in South Waziristan district of the country's restive northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, the Pakistani military said on Tuesday.

The militants targeted security forces in Sararogha area, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistani military's media wing, said.

Two soldiers were killed in the ensuing firefight, it added.

"Area clearance is being carried out to eliminate any terrorists found in the area," the ISPR said.

"Pakistan Army is determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve."

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Pakistani Taliban have frequently targeted security forces in the country's restive northwest.

Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber killed three Chinese nationals among four people in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi.

The explosion ripped through a van carrying the Chinese at the Karachi University about 2 pm local time. It was claimed by the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which said a woman suicide bomber carried out the attack.

Chinese targets have frequently been attacked by separatists from Balochistan, where Beijing is involved in huge infrastructure projects as part of its Belt and Road Initiative.
