Who’s Who: Omar Al-Attas, Red Sea Development Co.’s deputy chief for environmental sustainability

Omar Al-Attas is the deputy chief environmental sustainability officer at the Red Sea Development Co., and also a board member of the General Organization for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea.

Previously, Al-Attas was deputy CEO and chief strategy officer at the National Center for Environmental Compliance.

In 2020, he was vice president for environmental affairs and chairman of the permanent committee for the protection of coastal areas at the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection.

During his time at the authority, Al-Attas was a member of several delegations from the Kingdom to global bodies such as the UN Environment General Assembly, as well as a meeting of the International Maritime Organization regarding the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds.

From 2017 to 2019, he served as assistant vice president for environmental affairs at the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection, and as general supervisor of the Saudi National Ozone Unit and National Focal Point until 2020.

He is currently enrolled in the 2030 Leaders Misk program.

Al-Attas earned his Ph.D. in environmental engineering in 2012 from the University of Ottawa, Canada. During his studies, he was president of the Saudi Students Club in Ottawa, where he founded the Saudi Students Academic Fair.

Al-Attas received his master’s degree in environmental engineering in 2003 and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 2000 from King Fahad University of Petroleum Engineering.

As an academic, he has almost 20 years’ experience at King Fahad University of Petroleum Engineering’s civil and environmental engineering department.

He was an assistant professor from 2013 to 2019, a lecturer from 2004 to 2012, and a graduate assistant from 2000 to 2003.

Children’s Theater Festival opens in Qassim region

BURAIDAH: The Qassim Children’s Theater Festival opened on Tuesday bringing together professionals from across Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.

The event is being held under the patronage of Prince Dr. Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, governor of Qassim, at the Science Center in Unaizah governorate.

It has been Organized by the Theater and Performing Arts Association and executed by the Unaizah Theater Association, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Running until Jan. 31, it features shows, panel discussions, as well as training workshops to develop children’s theater and strengthen professional skills in the field.

Khaled Al-Baz, CEO of the Theater and Performing Arts Association, told the SPA the festival forms part of a broader strategy to position children’s theater as a distinct cultural sector.

“Children today constitute genuine audiences — tomorrow’s cultural architects,” Al-Baz said.

Ahmed Al-Humaimidi, president of the Unaizah Theater Association, said it was an investment in young people, noting that it extends beyond performances to include cultural and educational programming.

He said the initiative aims to nurture creativity, aesthetic awareness and a sense of belonging, while also identifying emerging talent and encouraging knowledge exchange among theater practitioners.

“Our association recognizes children’s theater as foundational to cultivating aware, creative character,” he said.

The festival serves as both an artistic showcase and a platform for professional dialogue, reflecting the Kingdom’s expanding cultural landscape and growing focus on children’s theater as an educational and cultural tool, the SPA noted.

This occurs alongside support for signature initiatives and performing arts promotion as quality-of-life enhancement.
