DUBAI: US-Palestinian DJ duo Simi and Haze Khadra have teamed up with the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) in a charitable effort to bring solar power to central Gaza.
In an Aug. 18 press statement, the spokesman for the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company (GEDCO) in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed Thabet, announced that electricity supply to homes and establishments, including hospitals, in Gaza dropped to three to four hours a day, with more than 20 hours of blackouts.
Through their latest initiative, the Los Angeles-based identical twins hope to provide electricity by installing solar panels in the homes of families with chronically sick children who rely on electricity for ventilation, blended food and mechanical medical equipment.
“A lot of you guys have asked us how you can continue to help the Palestinian cause so we did our research and found our call in the fact that basic luxuries we enjoy, like water and electricity, are extremely scarce in Gaza,” wrote the sisters on their joint Instagram account, flagging the urgent need to invest in solar power as electricity cuts and fuel shortages put critical pressure on Gaza’s health care sector.
“This puts many families, especially with chronically ill children, at risk. Together with @thepcrf, a trusted grassroots organization heroic in their humanitarian accomplishments, we are bringing solar power to central Gaza,” they wrote, adding “with your help, we will provide power to families with children who are in urgent need of electricity for ventilation, blended food and mechanical medical equipment to live.”
The twins, who grew up between Dubai, Riyadh and London, added a donation link to their Instagram bio for those who wish to contribute to the humanitarian cause.
“The one minute it takes you to fill the form means more than you can imagine to these families,” they wrote.
The sisters revealed that they will also continue to provide regular updates on the families that receive assistance via their Instagram Story Highlights.
