Saudi Arabia records 16 COVID-19 deaths, 1,269 new cases

  • The Kingdom said 1,081 patients recovered in past 24 hours
  • Asir police arrest 40 for violating maximum number of people permitted in a gathering

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia recorded 16 new COVID-19 related deaths on Wednesday, raising the total number of fatalities to 7,393.
The Ministry of Health confirmed 1,269 new confirmed cases reported in the Kingdom in the previous 24 hours, meaning 452,956 people have now contracted the disease. 
Of the total number of cases, 10,043 remain active and 1,489 in critical condition.
According to the ministry, the highest number of cases were recorded in Makkah with 444, followed by the capital Riyadh with 285, the Eastern Province with 162, Madinah recorded 89, and Asir confirmed 78 cases.
The health ministry also announced that 1,081 patients had recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries in the Kingdom to 435,520.

The ministry renewed its call on the public to register to receive the vaccine, and adhere to the measures and abide by instructions.
The health ministry also urged caution during the summer vacation and traveling abroad to reduce the spread of the virus.
Police in Asir said they arrested 40 people inside a home in Khamis Mushait for violating coronavirus measures and exceeding the maximum umber of people permitted in a gathering.
Media spokesman for Asir Police, Lt. Col, Zaid Al-Dabbash said legal measures have been taken, and penalties have been imposed on the host and everyone who attended the gathering.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs reopened 12 mosques in three regions after temporarily evacuating and sterilizing them after 12 people tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of mosques closed and reopened after being sterilized to 1,461 within 116 days.

Prince William tours AlUla, visits nature reserve

RIYADH: Britain’s Prince William wrapped up the final day of his official visit to Saudi Arabia with a tour of AlUla, where he visited the Wildlife Conservation and Biodiversity Protection at Sharaan Nature Reserve.

Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, the Saudi minister of culture, accompanied the 43-year-old heir to the British throne, an avowed environmentalist, during the tour. Prince William also met with rangers working to conserve the area’s wildlife population.

AlUla is home to the Hegra archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its ancient Nabataean tombs dotted amid the pristine sandstone mountains and valleys.

Saudi authorities have been vastly working on in recent years to make AlUla a top-tier destination for luxury travelers and art exhibitions.
