Saudi Arabia to launch 2 locally made satellites

  • ‘Shaheen Sat’ will be used for maritime tracking and ‘CubeSat’ for educational use

JEDDAH: Two satellites designed and made in Saudi Arabia will be launched on Saturday morning, said Prince Sultan bin Salman, chairman of the board of directors of the Saudi Space Authority.

“We congratulate ourselves on launching two satellites for the King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and King Saud University (KSU) tomorrow morning, manufactured by Saudi hands,” he said in a video.
One of the satellites, “Shaheen Sat,” will become the 17th KACST spacecraft to be launched in Kazakhstan. It will be used for photography and maritime tracking purposes.
The other satellite, “CubeSat,” has been designed by KSU for educational use. The university will become the first in the Kingdom to launch a satellite into space. The cube-shaped satellite has 10 centimeter dimensions and weighs about 1 kilogram.
KSU will use its ground station for the project. The station can communicate with satellites and the International Space Station.

I am hopeful that great moves and achievements will be made so that we can continue to be in the lead. The Kingdom deserves to be in a position of leadership in everything, including space activities.

“I congratulate King Saud University for undertaking these scientific missions that aim to develop the sectors related to the space industry,” said Prince Sultan.
He added: “I must recall a historical stage when the Kingdom, in 1985, participated with a big scientific team in a space mission. Therefore, when we presented the space program of KACST, after receiving the government’s approval, of course. A lot of work had been done already, leading to this construction stage and to the Kingdom’s launching of these satellites in a first step.”
Prince Sultan said that with the establishment of the Saudi Space Authority as an umbrella institution, the Kingdom is looking to produce major achievements in partnership with bodies and institutions that work in the field of scientific research, such as KACST, and others that work in manufacturing, including several Saudi institutions.
The satellite launch is being led by Dr. Saleh Al-Athel, Dr. Mohammed Al-Suwaiyel, Prince Turki bin Saud, Dr. Anas Al-Faris and their colleagues.
“I am hopeful that great moves and achievements will be made so that we can continue to be in the lead. The Kingdom deserves to be in a position of leadership in everything, including space activities,” he added.

Cabinet reviews Founding Day celebrations, rejects Israeli land laws

  • The meeting also acknowledged the start of the holy month of Ramadan

RIYADH: King Salman chaired a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday to review plans for this year’s Saudi Founding Day celebrations in Riyadh on Sunday, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The annual event, which falls on Feb. 22, commemorates the history of the Saudi state and its values of justice, cohesion and development established over nearly three centuries.

The meeting also acknowledged the start of the holy month of Ramadan, on Tuesday evening, and the continued success of the Hajj and Umrah seasons, which saw 19.5 million foreign pilgrims visiting the Kingdom last year, reflecting the progress toward the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

Minister of Information Salman Al-Dossari said after the meeting that the Cabinet was also briefed on the recent discussions between Saudi Arabia and other countries aimed at strengthening cooperation and enhancing security, stability, development and prosperity at both the regional and international level.

The ministers also condemned Israel’s decision to convert West Bank land into what it calls “state property” and reiterated their rejection of these illegal measures.

The meeting reviewed developments in the economic, cultural and social sectors and  expressed the nation’s continued support for the National Campaign for Charitable Work, the sixth edition of which will be held on Friday.

The ministers praised the success of the latest World Defense Show held in Riyadh last week, at which several agreements and strategic partnerships were reached to localize technologies, develop military industries and strengthen local supply chains in line with Vision 2030.

The Cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding between the General Directorate of Financial Investigations and the Anti-Money Laundering Monitoring and Analysis Center of the People’s Bank of China to enhance cooperation on financial investigations related to money laundering, terrorist financing and related crimes.

It also approved the National Strategy for Biosafety and Security, endorsed regulations governing the continued presence of vehicles registered in Gulf Cooperation Council states within Saudi Arabia and approved amendments to the basic statute of the World Esports Cup Foundation, which will be renamed the Esports Foundation.
