Pakistani’s most memorable music moments in 2020

  • If there is one silver lining for Pakistan in 2020, it was an active music scene
  • Independent releases and the introduction of new platforms and collaborations defined the year

Rawalpindi: If there is one silver lining for Pakistan in 2020, the year of the coronavirus pandemic, it was the music scene, with new releases, new platforms and new collaborations. Here are the moments that stood out the most:

The experiments of Meesha Shafi:

Meesha Shafi has had a phenomenal year in music, with back to back hits, multiple appearances on Coke Studio, including it’s season opener “Na Tutteya Ve,’ which has raked in nearly 7 million views, two appearances on the newly launched Velo Sound Station, and powerful collaborations with fellow Pakistani artists Abdullah Siddiqui on “Magenta Cyan,” and Mughal-e-Fun on “Sakal Ban.”

Corporate platforms, old and new:

Coke Studio, the long running musical platform returned in 2020 with a new season and a new look, with many of the recordings taking place in the artists’ own homes or in smaller studios to protect against the coronavirus. The return of rapper Bohemia, and duets between Meesha Shafi and Ali Pervez Mehdi, which has been viewed over 4 million times, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Zara Mardani, were some of the top Coke Studio moments of the year.

Another breath of fresh air was Velo Sound Station, the newest entry into Pakistan’s music industry format of corporate backed platforms, with releases by Atif Aslam, Umair Jaswal, Shamoon Ismail and Natasha Noorani, which has 4.8 million views. VSS also provided a platform for newer artists including Lahore based progressive metal band Takatak who released “Phantom,” on the platform.

Collaborations home and abroad:

Notable mentions:
Some of the other notable mentions of the year are: Ali Noor of Noori releasing the solo album Pagal, Natasha Humera Ejaz putting out EP Extra on Time, Taha G releasing a capsule of songs including Bhool Diye, and Ghalib, and Natasha Baig droping her album Zariya.

Weather authority forecasts of rains, thunderstorms in northwest Pakistan on Feb. 16-17

  • District administrations and rescue agencies have been asked to remain alert to deal with any possible emergency
  • The warning comes weeks after heavy snowfall blanketed several areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, cutting off villages

ISLAMABAD: The provincial disaster management authority (PDMA) has forecast rains and thunderstorms in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province on Feb. 16-17, urging citizens to exercise caution during the forecast period.

Light to moderate rain is expected in Kurram, Bannu, North and South Waziristan, Lakki Marwat and Tank districts, according to the PDMA. Heavy rain and hail are likely in Dera Ismail Khan.

The provincial disaster management authority said it has instructed district administrations and related agencies to remain alert to deal with any possible emergency during this period.

"Citizens are directed to avoid going near weak and under-construction buildings, signboards, electricity poles and solar panels," the PDMA said on Sunday night.

"Instructions have been issued to keep main highways and connecting roads open for traffic at all times."

The warning comes weeks after heavy snowfall blanketed several mountainous areas in KP, blocking roads and cutting off villages.

Khyber, South Waziristan and Swat districts were the most affected, where rescuers evacuated dozens of stranded residents and tourists to safety.

The PDMA urged local administrations to take precautionary measures in view of the threat of flooding in rivers, streams and stormwater drains.

"Citizens are directed to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather and stay in safe places," it said on Sunday. "Municipal bodies are directed to keep the drainage system clean in view of the threat of landslides and urban flooding."
