PM Khan accepts former general’s resignation as adviser over graft allegations

  • Lt Gen Asim Bajwa resigned last month after a Pakistani news website alleged he did not declare millions in family assets when he became an information adviser to the PM
  • Bajwa will continue to serve as head of the authority which oversees the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor initiative

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday accepted the resignation of retired Lt. Gen. Asim Bajwa as special assistant on information and broadcasting, the former general said on Twitter.
Last month, Khan refused to accept Bajwa’s resignation, which he offered after reporting by Pakistani news website FactFocus of allegations that Bajwa did not declare millions of dollars in family assets when he became a special adviser to Khan.
Bajwa denies the allegations. Bajwa also became chairman of the authority which oversees energy and infrastructure projects under the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative. He will continue to serve in this post.
“I requested the honorable Prime Minister [Imran Khan] to relinquish me from the additional portfolio of SAPM on Info & broadcasting,” Bajwa said in a Twitter post. “He very kindly approved my request.”

“I strongly rebut the baseless allegations levelled against me and my family,” the general said in a tweet last month when FactFocus first published its story. “I have and will always serve Pakistan with pride and dignity.”

Before retiring from the military last year, Bajwa served in several influential positions, including as the head of the army’s media wing.
