ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s thrice former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, who was recently released on medical bail, could soon travel to the US from the UK for better medical treatment, officials told Arab News.
“It is highly likely that Sharif would be taken to the US for treatment…after consultation with doctors,” Raja Zafrul Haq, chairman of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), said on Sunday.
PML-N General Secretary, Ahsan Iqbal, who met with Sharif in London on Saturday said the doctors were trying to stabilize his condition. “They are keeping the option of taking him (Sharif) to the US for further treatment under active consideration,” Iqbal said.
Sharif, 69, who holds the portfolio of his party’s supreme leader, is seeking medical treatment in London for multiple health issues, including an auto-immune blood disorder, high blood pressure, and a deteriorating kidney condition.
Earlier this month, Sharif’s personal doctor, Adnan Khan, said that recent medical tests also showed an obstruction in the blood supply to the brain.
The former prime minister was allowed to travel to London after he was released on bail in October from a seven-year sentence for corruption.
On November 16, the Lahore High Court ordered the government to remove Sharif’s name from the Exit Control List allowing him to travel abroad for medical treatment.
However, the move was not without a set of conditions imposed by the government – including submitting periodic medical reports notarised by Pakistan’s embassy in London – to prevent him from seeking exile abroad.
