JEDDAH: More than 1,300 youth from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, as well as Arab residents in Al-Kamil in Makkah, participated in “Hiking Shamnasir Mount” on Sunday.
The event was held over two days under the slogan, “We are all a sacrifice for the homeland.”
The participants competed in hiking the mountain top, considered the highest peak in the area, enjoying the beautiful scenery of the province, as well as the touristic caves in the area.
The hikers embarked from the meeting point to climb Shamnasir Mount through routes prepared according to specifications of Saudi Hiking, undertaking all safety precautions.
One of the province’s residents was the first to arrive to the mountain top after traveling a distance of 8 kilometers in less than two hours. While the last participant traveled the distance in three hours and a half.
There were no emergency incidents.
At the end of the event the governor of Al-Kamil planted 50 Al-Sidr trees and raised the Saudi flag at the mountain top, announcing the end of the event.
Governor Ayed Al-Qahtani thanked the people of the province for their efforts. He also said that planning for the event took five months, under the supervision of founder of Saudi Hiking, Ali bin Mubarak Al-Qahtani.
He said out that the team worked on choosing the appropriate routes and surveying the mountain area as well as taking the necessary procedural steps to implement them.

The Red Crescent in Jeddah also participated in the event to offer emergency services to participants if needed.
Official spokesman Abdullah Ahmed Abuzaid said the Red Crescent participated with eight emergency teams, allocated in several locations around Mount Shamnasir.
