Pakistani pride hits new levels on first Independence Day of ‘Naya Pakistan’

  • Pakistan has seen an unprecedented level of patriotism in the weeks building up to Independence day
  • Pop-up stalls sell Pakistan-themed merchandise and citizens wave flags as they drive through city streets

ISLAMABAD: You know a big celebration is looming when Pakistan’s cities light up days before a national holiday — and the build-up to August 14th, 2018 has been no exception. In fact, the most anticipated holiday of this year has been met with fervor rarely seen before.
Buildings overlooking the motorway leading into Islamabad have been decked out in green, white and gold lights and the capital is also glittering. Alongside the decorated government and private buildings comes an unprecedented wave of patriotism that has swept the country since the elections a few weeks ago.
There has been a boom in vendors setting up pop-up stalls in Islamabad during the past few weeks selling merchandise to mark the 71st birthday of Pakistan.
T-shirts, mugs, horns, flags, kameezes, hats and even shoes are sold alongside the roads leading into residential areas, markaz, and even the M2 motorway.
It also has become quite common to see large flags being waved on the back of motorbikes, cars — at times with people hanging out of windows or through sunroofs — cars covered in flags on each side, as well as profusions of green, white and gold tinsel.
The patriotic fervor seems to have been triggered by the change in the country’s leadership and anticipation of what is to come when the upcoming prime minister, Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is sworn in and begins his laying his “Naya Pakistan,” the New Pakistan he promised during the election campaign.
Firework shows went off at midnight in major cities including Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, and a number of small and large celebrations have been planned throughout the country to mark the day.
Social media was buzzing with Independence Day-related posts. Imran Khan, @ImranKhanPTI, posted:
14 Aug 2018: On this Independence Day I am filled with the greatest optimism. Despite our grave economic crises, due to corruption & cronyism, I know if we are united in our resolve, we will rise to the challenge & Pak will become the great nation envisaged by our Quaid and Iqbal.

Pakistan expresses solidarity with Canada as school shooting claims 9 lives

  • At least 9 dead, 27 wounded in shooting incident at secondary school, residence in British Columbia on Tuesday
  • Officials say the shooter was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after the incident

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed solidarity with Canada as a high school shooting incident in a British Columbia town left at least nine dead, more than 20 others injured.

Six people were found at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School while a seventh died on the way to the hospital, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement on Tuesday. Two other people were found dead at a home that police believe is connected to the shooting at the school. A total of 27 people were wounded in the attack.

In an initial emergency alert, police described the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair,” with officials saying she was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Saddened by the tragic shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia,” Sharif wrote on social media platform X.

He conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims, wishing a swift recovery to those injured in the attack.

“Pakistan stands in solidarity with the people and Government of Canada in this difficult time,” he added.

Canadian police have not yet released any information about the age of the shooter or the victims.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the violence, announcing he had suspended plans to travel to the Munich Security Conference on Wednesday.

While mass shootings are rare in Canada, last April, a vehicle attack that targeted a Filipino cultural festival in Vancouver killed 11 people.

British Columbia Premier David Eby called the latest violence “unimaginable.”

Nina Krieger, British Columbia’s minister of public safety, described it as one of the “worst mass shootings” in Canada’s history.
