JEDDAH: The UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, recently met the UN ambassadors of the Arab coalition countries, including the UAE.
During his meeting with Saudi Ambassador to the UN Abdallah Al-Mouallimi and the UAE’s Ambassador to the UN Lana Nusseibeh, Griffiths discussed his recent consultations on the political process in Yemen.
“The UAE continues to fully support Griffiths in his efforts to advance a settlement and enforce Security Council Resolution 2216,” the UAE mission to the UN tweeted.
On Thursday, Griffiths said that he plans to invite warring parties to Geneva on Sept. 6 to discuss a framework for peace talks. The talks would also discuss confidence-building measures to end the conflict.
The last attempt to resolve the conflict through talks took place in Kuwait in 2016, but the negotiations collapsed after the Houthi militia rejected a UN peace plan.
The UK’s permanent representative to the UN, Karen Pierce, also confirmed the UK’s support for the efforts of Griffiths.
Pierce strongly condemned the attack on the Saudi oil tanker and other aggressive attacks in the Red Sea, expressing concern about shipments of arms passing through the area.
Kuwait’s permanent representative to the UN, Mansour Al-Otaibi, said that despite the announcement of the Arab coalition of a halt to its military operations to restore the port of Hodeidah, the Houthi militias continued targeting civilian and populated sites in Saudi Arabia by ballistic missiles.
He said that the Houthi militias are practicing new ways of challenging and threatening the will of the international community by targeting the safety of international shipping in the Strait of Bab Al-Mandeb and the Red Sea.
