Deaths on Oman’s roads drop more than 7% year-on-year

DUBAI: The number of deaths on Oman’s roads dropped by more than 7 percent year-on-year from 2016 to 2017, according to new data released by the country’s police, Times of Oman reported.

There were 640 deaths across the country in 2017, compared to 692 the previous year, while the number of injured in traffic collisions dropped by nearly 4 percent for the same period from 3,261 to 3,134.

Of the total there were 417 Omani deaths in 201 - 89 of them females – while there 223 expats killed on the country’s roads.

According to the data Fridays accounted for the most amount of deaths in 2017, the report added, with 109 fatalities in 532 collisions.

And November was the worst month in 2017 for road collisions, accounting for 387 smashes.

The overall number of recorded collisions has also dropped by 18.56 percent falling from 4,721 in 2016 to 3,845 in 2017 – that was a drop of 876. And most happened during the day the report added.

Speeding was cited as the most common cause of collisions, although this too had fallen by nearly 10 percent from 2,499 to 2,261 year-on-year.
