Dubai Ruler approves construction of 500km of cycle track

DUBAI: The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, has given the go ahead for the introduction of 500 kilometers of cycle track on the emirate’s roads by 2021, as well as major investments in greener public transport, UAE state news agency WAM has reported.
The cycling lanes are part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to reduce the country’s reliance on cars and to reduce its carbon footprint.
The announcements were made during a visit to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Agency, when Sheikh Mohammed also approved plans to increase the capacity of at least five of Dubai’s Metro stations to cope with the increase in passenger numbers.
The stations outlined for development are: Burj Khalifa, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Internet City, Damac in Dubai Marina and Emirates Exchange in Jebel Ali.
Meanwhile Sheikh Mohammed also reviewed the Dubai Expo 2020-related plan to provide 750 green buses and 3,000 taxis for people attending the event.
