TV presenter Richard Hammond escapes serious injury in horror smash

DUBAI: Former “Top Gear” presenter Richard Hammond has been taken to hospital after he was involved in a crash while filming in Switzerland for the Amazon show “The Grand Tour.”
The 47-year-old celebrity was driving a $2.55 million supercar when the vehicle flipped and burst into flames, British website MailOnline reported.
Sources at the scene said the crash was “really bad,” reported British tabloid The Sun. But despite the serious nature of the crash, Hammond was conscious when he was pulled from the burning vehicle.
“Richard is conscious, but very shaken,” a source was quoted as saying. “He is currently being treated in hospital for a fractured knee and having the once over.”
The source added: “It’s quite incredible he’s come away from this with nothing more serious quite frankly.”
It is not the first time Hammond has been involved in a motor crash while filming. In 2006, he escaped death when he was involved in a 463.5 kilometer-per-hour rocket car crash as he tried to break the British land speed record for the BBC’s “Top Gear.” On that occasion, he nearly died when he slipped into a coma.
Three months ago, he was knocked unconscious when he fell from a motorcycle while filming for the show.
In a statement, an Amazon spokeswoman told The Sun: “Richard Hammond was involved in a serious crash after completing the Hemburg Hill Climb in Switzerland in a Rimac Concept One, an electric super car built in Croatia, during filming for The Grand Tour Season 2 on Amazon Prime, but very fortunately suffered no serious injury.”
