ADEN: A joint Saudi-Yemeni special forces operation killed an alleged spokesman for Daesh in Yemen early Tuesday, authorities said, while rescuing eight civilians who were inside the house where he was hiding. The operation was carried out in the city of Seiyun in Hadramout province by the Saudi-led coalition’s joint special forces and Yemen’s Counter-Terrorism Force 22, Yemen’s Central State Security Service said in a statement. The target was identified as the Daesh spokesman known by the alias Abu Hudhayfah Al-Ansari. The security service said Al-Ansari was killed while hiding in a residential property, where eight civilians were also present — one man, two women and five children. One other person found inside the house was arrested after resisting the forces. He was wounded during the operation, treated medically after being removed from the site and then transferred to a secure location, the statement said. Security forces recovered several items during a search of the property and the collection of evidence, including an explosive belt, two laptops, five mobile phones and two tablets. The explosive belt was disabled and detonated to eliminate the threat it posed to civilians, while the other items were secured for further investigation and documentation by the relevant authorities. The women and children were removed from the house and taken to a safe location, the statement said, adding that the joint forces left the area after successfully completing the operation. Yemen’s Central State Security Service praised personnel involved in the operation for killing the wanted suspect after he resisted, arresting his associate and providing him with medical care. It also commended the forces for protecting the women and children inside the property without injury and avoiding civilian or property damage in the densely populated residential neighborhood. The service attributed the operation’s success to joint intelligence-sharing efforts concerning wanted suspects, supported by surveillance and reconnaissance systems, as well as operational planning and training. The statement said the operation was conducted within the framework of intelligence cooperation between Yemen’s Central State Security Service and the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The service said it would continue pursuing wanted terrorists, arresting them and bringing them to justice as part of Yemen’s efforts to combat terrorism. It also pledged to maintain coordination with the coalition and international partners, saying Yemen would not become a safe haven for terrorists.
