Saudi Arabia wins six medals at Romania Olympiad in mathematics

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has achieved another milestone by winning six medals, one silver and five bronze medals, at the 20th Junior Mathematics Olympiad, held in Romania from June 24-29, with the participation of 22 countries from around the world.
According to the team leader, the Saudi recipients of the medals are: Asa’ad bin Hamid Saleh of Jeddah, who won silver medal, while the five bronze medals went to Mohammed bin Ali Ansari, Yanbu; Omar ibn Muhammad Habibullah; Mannar bin Ismail Kurd, Makkah; Fares bin Faiz Sayegh, Makkah; and Thana bin Khalid Al-Haidari from Yanbu.
The event, organized by the Balkan countries with the participation of various other countries, including England and France, are for 15-year-old students.
The Ministry of Education and the Foundation of King Abdul Aziz and His Companions for Talent and Creativity, or Mawhiba, expressed their greetings to the leadership and the nation for such a scientific achievement.
In statement, they said such world records reflect the level of education among Saudi students and the importance given to science by the leadership. They noted that this year’s participation came for the fourth time in a row, represented by the Ministry of Education and the foundation.
Saudi Arabia has been striving to maintain its achievements during the previous events (13 medals), and to increase the motivation of training through competitions and the preparation of the team representing the Kingdom in future international competitions.
Six students take part on a single day, where students are tested with four questions in internationally recognized mathematical branches (algebra, geometry and number theory and fixtures); each question is given 10 points, 40 each, and 240 to each team.
