RIYADH, 22 December 2005 — The Sri Lankan International School in Jeddah held its 6th Annual Sports Day recently with a variety of events for children of age group under-5 to 15.
The school’s Western Band welcomed Masihudeen Inamullah, the consul general of Sri Lanka, who as the patron of the school unfurled the country’s national flag, while Elmo Jayamaha, chairman of the board of management, hoisted the school flag.
The events started with the lighting of the Olympic Torch by Head Prefect Faten Jiffry and the sports captains of the two houses, Chandira de Silva from Manel House and Faisal Nilar from Araliya House.
Some of the events that took place were the 50m race for boys and girls, filling the basket, 4x25m race, 4x50m race, Duck and Fish, 50m Hurdles, Baton Passing and Slow Cycling. There was also a Fancy Dress Competition for the Under 5 age group and the winners were: 1. Prashasti Dewasurendra “The Kandyan Dancer”; 2. Shadiya “The Grape”; and 3. Hala Hussein “Egyptian girl”.
The highlights of the evening were a colorful drill display by students below grade six and the march past. Araliya House won the march past while the best house decoration award was snatched by Manel House.
Some of the track events were finalized before the official Sports Day. As part of this occasion, an exciting badminton match for boys and girls and a netball match for girls were held, where the Araliya House won the netball match.
Championship Cups were awarded to: (Under-5 boys) Diraen Steven; (Under-7 boys) Ahmed Nivad Nihar; (Under-7 girls) Nahla Miskin; (Under-9 boys) Azvi Asath; (Under-13 boys) Yasir Razak; (Under-15 boys) Faisal Nilar; (Under-15 girls) Nipunika Jayamaha.
The winners received gold, silver and bronze metals together with certificates distributed by the chief guest, and other members of the board of management and the principal. A vote of thanks was proposed by Head Prefect Jiffry, thus concluding the event with the national anthem.
