LONDON: The Jordanian Armed Forces arrested four individuals on Sunday as they attempted to illegally cross the border within the country’s Southern Military Zone.
The Border Guard in the Southern Military Zone covers a vast area of the country, including the governorates of Aqaba, Ma’an, Tafilah, and Al-Karak. Authorities have not specified from which country’s border the individual attempted to infiltrate.
The Armed Forces pledged to secure the country’s borders and prevent unauthorized crossings while maintaining continuous surveillance and high operational readiness, according to the Jordan News Agency.
Separately, anti-narcotics teams announced on Sunday that they arrested 200 suspects in drug-related crimes, including 64 alleged dealers involved in 42 trafficking cases. They also seized a total of 1,238 kg of crystal meth in the weeklong drug crackdown.
Jordanian authorities announce several monthly incidents of intercepting drug smuggling or infiltration attempts through its border, mainly with Syria and Iraq. Criminal networks have long attempted to exploit Jordan’s geographic location in the heart of the Middle East as a transit point for smuggling drugs that are typically bound for Gulf countries.
